Where I thought it was darn good, it highlighted some qualities within the Rand family without having to Mary Sue the shit out of the characters. Loyalty being one.
I had thought of it in terms of loyalty, like Ben said, given what a closed, tight-knit family it was. Great observation about the burying of things, Steve.
Dogs have always been rather iconic for me, and likening folks to them (loyal dog, mad dog, dog in the night howling at the moon) seemed pretty moody to me. A family whose names are all somehow connected also seemed like a powerful way to tighten their bond. It's also something of a leftover that I remember from a movie I saw way back when I was a kid called LOLLY MADONNA XXX (kiss kiss kiss, in case you're wondering). All the family members in that were named after birds.

I'd thought it might come off kinda gimmicky, but darned if it didn't fit perfectly. Especially with the burying of all their old bones in and under their house.
