G. (geewhiz) Here's a opening list of possible directions. React to this and discuss where our interests lie at the onset because after that, well, anything can happen (if we're any kind of proper book club). There should be something here for everyone but certainly introduce something you'd like to discuss if it's not listed.

G. (geewhiz) We could also focus works read at a notable bookstore such as "City Lights"

amy | 2 comments My past book groups have mostly read fiction with the occasional biography thrown in for good measure. We've typically had the host for the next group pick a title so that everyone eventually gets to do so.

I like that idea that I'll read a book not of my choosing and often enjoyed the discussions the most when we read titles out of my comfort zone.

And that is why I like many of the proposed topics, but do not feel that we need to choose any specific one.

G. (geewhiz) Great points, Amy. Thank you. My last group used the polls available here in GR. The host chose 5 books they wanted to read. The first round eliminated anything someone had read already (unless they really wanted to read it again). Once these were ruled out they were replaced with other options keep keep the choices at five. Once the book was chosen the host would generate a quiz to be taken at the beginning of the meeting and some kind of gag prize was awarded to the winner. This club was 20 years old, however. We had bylaws, etc. Some of the structure and organization was a distraction, for sure. But we did find some pretty phenomenal reads by challenging ourselves with themes. There are some truly gifted non-fiction writers at work these days, particularly in history and cultural anthropology. Reading Malcolm Gladwell or Naomi Klein in a diverse group? Pretty exciting stuff. So far our group is comprised of people who are ready to try some different approaches, myself included. Let's keep talking.
