Hello and welcome back to Malazan! Wow what a ride we have here...

All sorts of new and old friends right off the bat I have a gazillion things to bring up so let's go:

1. Kruppe. I have heard a ton of complaints about the way ICE portrays Kruppe. He is called stained, greasy, etc. It's true. Kruppe is treated in a horrific manner despite his clearly superior state. and not fed enough. It was annoying offensive and disrespectful. But you know what? I was so glad to hang out with him again I decided I wasnt going to care. Good to see you Kruppe!

2. Lots of old friends we see again: Aragan , the captain from way back in GotM is now the ambassador to Darujhistan, and apparently very well endowed. Good to know :) , Taya-is this the same girl that (view spoiler). This could get interesting; and the red-headed Malazan is Antsy?? Yay for Antsy! Good to see him in the mix this time, instead of peeking through Picker's keyhole :S; Poor Kiska is now hanging out with Leoman of all people...lol You can see where this is probably gonna lead, and I am already not happy about it...yuck

We also see litttle pieces from Traveller, Caladan Brood, Rallick and Vorcan, Envy and Fisher, Barathol and Scillara, and Karsa and Samar! I think this was just a cameo, but....I am sure some of these will pop up more than others as we go along...

Amelia (narknon) | 523 comments I've just read the prologue so far. I'm really interested to see how ICE will pull these elements from the different series together. I think this is the first time he's using characters that SE used in his series. I've only got a little bit of Kruppe so far. Lee said he liked the book, so it'll be good (trusting Lee's opinion here.)

Lee (kiwifirst) I really enjoyed this book and felt it was by far his best bit of wrok. Except for Kruppe, which i cringed through.
I felt the story through this was really interesting and kept me from going off and starting CG. What I really enjoyed was his development of Eriksons secondary characters. We get to understand Blend a lot more, where as under SE we saw Picker's point of view. Antsy has a major role and really does shine. I am not going to say anything else, but will follow the thread, I read this a while ago now, so don;t want to give anything away, you know like Caladan and Karsa starting a relationship ................. witness!

Amelia (narknon) | 523 comments You mean Caladan Brood and Karsa? That could be very interesting indeed.

I'm a couple of chapters in now. I see what you mean about Kruppe. It's almost like his friends are saying their true feelings about his eating habits and lifestyle. Some of his dialogue feels just a little bit off, but I'm going to be like Maggie and just flow with it.

I'm really excited about reading more about the Segulah. Can't wait to see what happens with them!

I cant agree more about the new characters...I wonder about this Malakai...is he going to be someone we have seen before?
Ebbin the scholar seems to have a big part to play here.
I am loving Jan, the 2nd. Exploring the Seguleh culture is going to be fascinating!

oh and I loved how Picker smelled Spindle coming and tried to lock the doors.....lol

Lee (kiwifirst) I agree you learn so much more about the Seguleh in this book. Their inflexibility frustrates me at times, as there is so much talent going to waste due to ridged rules.
The Seguleh play a big role in the book, so enjoy.

and we got another reading from Lady envy...sounds like we will see Draconus as well!

1 mesmerizing scene for me was when Ebbin watched (view spoiler)

Amelia (narknon) | 523 comments I just read the scene you're talking about. Poor Ebbin!

So --any theories on the man with the gold mask?

or how about the identity of Orchid? She is obviously more than she sppears as well....

Lots of mystery characters!

Amelia (narknon) | 523 comments It seems like the man with the gold mask is related to the Segulah. I'm thinking that he's One or somehow connected to that position.

Orchid has to be Tiste Andii. She know too much not to be.

This would explain why Topper is so hot to go after her in the third section.

I wondered the same thing myself!
