MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments We're going to try our best to read all 32 books in the DiscWorld series!

ETA: Homeinmyshoes posted the list below. :-D

Thanks!

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments This is going to be quite the quest if you choose to sign up for this. 39 books at present with somewhere in the range of 13,000 pages. And there's still a posthumously another released title in the works. #40 would be Raising Steam and is scheduled for release in 2013.

I thank you personally Terry for making me laugh at mankind and society in general through your wit and satirical outlook on things.

Here are some Discworld links that might be of help during this quest.

Discworld on wikipedia
Sir Terry Pratchett's Website, he is a sir, you know
The Discworld page here on GoodReads

Here is the complete list of books within Discworld. At least from what I found on Wikipedia:

2. The Light Fantastic
3. Equal Rites
4. Mort
5. Sourcery
6. Wyrd Sisters
7. Pyramids
8. Guards! Guards!

Nyssa | 1569 comments Thank you Mrs. J.

The DiscWorld challenge "widget" can be found here: DiscWorld Challenge .

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

I've thought about this series a few times over the last year or so. Still thinking about it.

message 5: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments I signed up. I'll probably never finish by the end of next year with my challenge list for next year though.

message 6: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Would you like me to extend it? If so, how long should I make it?

message 7: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments I'll try for the end of 2013, but that will be pushing it. 29 more books to go for me in the series might be a tricky one.

After I sign up with the widget, when or how will it show up on my homepage?

message 8: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments It doesn't. I placed a link for my challenges in the first post of my challenge thread. I think, however, you might be able to get an actual widget to add to yours. Let me look around for a sec, and I'll see if I can find out how.

message 9: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments Nyssa wrote: "Would you like me to extend it? If so, how long should I make it?"

Actually, could you open the range to be something like 2000 to 2020? As much as I enjoy Pratchett, I'm not going to re-read the titles I've already read in the past.

message 10: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments I don't know if it will let me go that far back, but I'll see what i can do.

As for the widget, you can make custom widgets based on the groups your in, but I didn't see anything about individual challenges.

message 11: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Heh! It looks like it took... So, the date is January 1st 2000 to December 31st 2020.

Don't forget to make a challenge specific bookshelf and add your Discworld books to it, so that they show up.

message 12: by HomeInMyShoes (last edited Jul 12, 2012 02:12PM) (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments Woohoo it worked. 10 down, 29 to go. Now I'm disappointed I just started a non-discworld book today. Oh well.

message 13: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments Okay, I forgot that there is a potential posthumous release of book number 40 for the series.

Wow. That's...quite a lot.

It's going to take me some time to get going, I see.

message 15: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments I've got both Wyrd Sisters and Pyramids on order from the library so I'll be getting on with the challenge in short order.

I'm a little confused. Terry Pratchett hasn't died, has he? I'm sure I'd have seen that on the news...

I am interested in the challenge - I've read a lot of the Discworld books, but there are gaps. But right now I have a list of specific named books in my 2012 challenge that I need to get to first, and I'm not sure if 2013 isn't already full up...

message 17: by HomeInMyShoes (last edited Jul 16, 2012 02:33PM) (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments ^I was completely in error on that. I don't know why I believed that other than I had read something somewhere (probably a ludicrous Internet blog). I knew he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's a while ago and had assumed he had passed. My bad. I'll go fix that.

Orlok | 555 comments ^ it's that little red hat you're wearing. Affects the brainwaves...;)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments Nice to see someone else take the plunge. I've got the book club selection plus Another Roadside Attraction to read prior to any more Pratchett. I'm thinking a September Pratchett fest might be in order though.

I've got to find some of these omnibuses. I can't do a one to one book ratio. It would kill my budget.

message 26: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments Library. Library. Library. I can get everything in paper format (stupid Kindle, stupid Overdrive, stupid Canada...I digress) except Moving Pictures for some reason from my library system. I love my e-reader, but budget is my first concern.

So far this year: e-books 15; paper books 31.

message 27: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments I do need to use the library more often, lol. It's hard right now but I heard they are building one near my house soon. RIght now the closest library is 20 mins or more away.

message 28: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments I just put the next two on hold. We'll see how this works...

message 29: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments From my house, I have three libraries within 4km, all on a single bus route. The best part is I just go to the Web site, request the books and then get an e-mail when it's time to pick them up from whatever location I want.

*jealous*

THey are putting one in walking distance...but who knows when it will open.

I do love the email function, though. :-D

message 31: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments Unseen Academicals for number 13. Yep, I'm way out of order.

message 32: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments I need some help here. Moving Pictures is now unavailable for Canadians from Amazon. A bigger problem is that Moving Pictures is not available at my libary either. Sigh.

I can buy it for you and ship it...no clue on price.

I can buy it for you and gift it - no clue how that works, either.

Let me know

message 34: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments I finished Making Money to get to 14 of 40.

Problem solved. Birthday gift. :)

Thank you for the kind offer.

So where are all the Discworlders? I'm up to 15 now having finished off Moving Pictures. I'll be taking most of next year off for my new and improved reading challenge, I'll be back on the trail either late next year or early 2014 or fit in a few more this year.

message 36: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments Apparently Nyssa is 305% done this challenge. Way to go Nyssa. :)

I finished one more with Eric. I think I should be at 17 complete now, but I've only got 15 showing. I'll have to see what I have failed to shelve properly.

message 37: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments I fail at challenges.

:(

message 38: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments But you try. I've noticed you're at a staggering 5% of your reading goal this year.

message 39: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments THnak you.

I'm going to find a way to break free...

message 40: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments I neglected to mention that your book challenge number is more than the total number of books I've read in the last four years. :)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments Homeinmyshoes wrote: "I neglected to mention that your book challenge number is more than the total number of books I've read in the last four years. :)"

lol!

That should be doable for me. But I'm broken or something right now... :-(

message 42: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments I just finished Small Gods. Which I think puts me at 18/39(soon to be 40), although it looks like I've got some misfiling in my GoodReads shevles that I'll have to fix at some point.

message 43: by HomeInMyShoes (last edited Dec 05, 2013 05:58AM) (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments I finished up Reaper Man and am on Witches Abroad now which would put me at 20 titles finished.

message 44: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments I finished Hogfather which puts me at 21 books read now. I've officially read more than half the series now.

message 45: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments And if anyone has been under a rock, Raising Steam has been released so the official number of books to read is now two score or forty for you moderns.

Nyssa, you need to fix your book categorization issues as you've officially read 122 or more than 300% of the series right now. :)

message 46: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 459 comments Just finished Color of Magic, so it will take me awhile to get to Raising Steam.

message 47: by HomeInMyShoes (last edited Jan 16, 2014 06:19AM) (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments ^I read about four titles a year and probably none this year so it will take me at about five years to get to Raising Steam.

message 48: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments Wow. Still rocking.

I still have only read 2

message 49: by Stephanie (last edited Mar 17, 2014 01:22PM) (new)

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 459 comments Listened to The Light Fantastic last month. Great book and funny. Still love Luggage.

I totally loved Equal Rites which I finished earlier today. New story (no Rincewind). I also liked Cilia Embry as a reader. I hope she does more of these books. Great, easy to understand voice and characterization.

I'm only 60% behind, it says.

message 50: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 459 comments Just finished book 5 Sourcery. The next one is Wyrd Sisters read by Celia Embry. yay! I love Nigel Planer as well, make no mistake.
