Blood from a Shadow

Book Description

Contemporary conspiracy thriller. Threat to US from al Qaeda and Iran during 2012 Presidential election.

2012. War weary Americans hail the endgame in Iraq and Afghanistan.
But al Qaeda must avenge Bin Laden with a new 9/11. And the old enemy, Iran, teases towards nuclear capability.
******
So the war on terror continues, but it must be kept in the shadows now. The Presidential machines cannot allow a mistake, there is an election to be won.

Con Maknazpy is weary too, still searching for his own peace. A hero in his native New York’s famous 69th Regiment, he just wants to retreat into the shadows of the streets he knows so well.

But Maknazpy is no ordinary man, he has been anointed with destiny. It’s in his blood and in the shadows of his soul. And the ghosts of the past and the future mark out that destiny, in blood. Blood that takes him to Ireland, Rome and Istanbul before he finds his own truth in the shadows of his Yonkers childhood.
Maknazpy’s destiny is to be a savior, but can he save himself?

FROM THE INSIDE COVER
Self control is a drag when you are a hero. But it is absurd when you suddenly realise that you never had control, that somebody else has always decided what you will do, decided what others will do to you.
Con Maknazpy thought he knew who he was. His future would be just like his past. Until someone decided to torque his future and Maknazpy’s world spins beneath his feet. His story twists and snakes away from him, treacherous and obscure, he struggles to scratch back control. But, in the end, he must discover that his world was never what he thought it was. Still a hero, but now he must ask why.
***
It’s the old story. Deadly enemies, cultures so alien that neither can tolerate the other’s very existence. One or other side decimated by internal weakness and division. The people’s hero must step up to save the day. The essence of ancient myth and legends, from the epic Shahnameh of Iran in the east, to the Táin of the Irish in the west. These truths have always been created to allow our understanding of the world we find ourselves in.

Maknazpy’s story is an old tale retold, but neither he nor the reader need to know about these ancient worlds. They do need to know about the volatile world of 2012.
The War on Terror. Nuclear Iran. Homeland Security.
If he survives long enough, Maknazpy can finally decide which truth, which world, is real.

Blood from a Shadow is an Irish American story and that history and culture is threaded through the tale, but the frame of reference owes as much to more modern influences.
Think Jim Thompson, James M Cain and Chester Himes. Chinatown, Three Days of the Condor and Bodyheat. Miller's Crossing and The Usual Suspects. Where reality is created from confusion and lies, and the hero is always the last to know.
