This thread is shamelessly copied from Ian Graye's similar thread in The Savage Detectives Discussion Group, because it's such a great idea to have a place to share music as well as book discussions. Thanks, Ian!

And thanks to Jason for creating a collaborative Spotify playlist for TM&M. Please feel free to add any songs that tie into TM&M in some way: http://open.spotify.com/user/ancatdub...

Madeleine (titular_line) | 14 comments If the few people I know here are in any way indicative of the collective's taste, I anticipate stuffing Slothrop the iPod with lots and lots of new tunes in the next few months.

I already feel like the entirety of Gogol Bordello's catalog and The Real Tuesday Weld's musical reinterpretation of "I, Lucifer" will be in heavy rotation once September comes. The former might not be thematically applicable but I don't see that being much of a problem.

This will be fun! I've been very impressed with how wonderful the Music thread in SD has been, so I knew it would be something M&M group members would run with, too. I also know that many group members (I'm looking at you, Madeleine and Jason, among others), have great taste in music. I'm looking forward to lots of new favorites coming from this thread, although I now feel some urgency to name my iPod, too. :)

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 64 comments Btw, it is too early to share M&M music now. Let's focus on SD. But I'll be away for a week and want you to have something to remember me by. This is the song that's been at the top of my playlist rotation for the last few weeks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghb6eD...

Agreed re. SD music for now, but what a great choice for a send-off song for you. I have their album, and have listened a few times - it's a great summer album with lots of energy. Here's hoping for a wonderful vacation for you, Jason! Where are you headed?

Well done!! I'm now wondering how many other bands/songs were influenced by M&M. Another research project!

Freaky. I was just reading that he used to go out with Kim Gordon in high school.

According to Wikipedia (warning, possible spoilers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_mast...), it looks like a lot of bands have paid homage to M&M.

Seriously, this group is reminding me of all the reasons why I love this site: I would have never read M&M before all y'all piqued my interest in it, and now my newly (and somewhat impatiently) purchased copy is hurtling toward my home at the speed of the postal service while I can't stop researching and getting more excited about it.

Has anyone read this Will Self introduction?

"It has been suggested that Mick Jagger may have been inspired by the novel in writing the song "Sympathy for the Devil".[13] This is also suggested in Will Self's foreword to the Vintage edition of the Michael Glenny translation."

I haven't seen it - sounds like it would be worth finding, though. I wonder if I will end up with 4 different translations?
