Haikus have three lines, with 5 syllables, 7 syllables, and 5 syllables respectively.

Here's one by Mike Kretsch:
Someone please tell me
why it is we don't have one.
(a base on the moon?)

Jumping right in with my first attempt at Haiku since primary school:Disruption in time:
Past and future collide like
Ripples on a pond.

Awesome.

@Angel - sharks and strands and kestrels....yeah, I can see why you write :)@cturtlechick - evocative! Did you mean Earth, or terraforming? Either way, love it.
Sidebar Bonus Competition #1Every now and again I'm going to post a bonus competition in this area in addition to the main SciFi Haiku winners. For this prize, make me a haiku with a minimum of two of the following words:
blaster
lune
apsis
thrust
gee
Happy syllable counting!

Ok here is my boring but heartfelt contribution:
(and now you now why I read rather than write(!))

what excellent taste
(and now you now why I read rather than write(!))
Poetry I can do. Prose not so much. Here's mine.A blaster in space,
Two lunes in apsis brightly:
Wonders thrust on gee
(probably really obscure but I took it as a challenge to use ALL the words. :) ) Too bad there is not a center html tag. Haiku is supposed to be visually centered as well.
@Kim *grin* - obscure but....complete. Congratulations, you win the sidebar challenge.
Everyone else: The main Haiku Challenge is still open....give us your syllables!
@PenumbraSimple, and absolutely beautiful. Really does need a SciFi-familiar background - Charming was talking about that in Blaine's thread today, about how much we infer just from a few lines because we're familiar with SciFi.
Thanks, Aldous and Angel :) I guess it does sound like it could be a book blurb with the right image.
Prize WinnersHiya folks - this was a very difficult thing to do, start narrowing down choices to award prizes to. Everything was so very fantastic! But we tried, and here's the list of winners:
1. Zeo, for Lithium Sun
2. Penumbra, for Long Asleep
3. Kim, for the sidebar challenge with Blasters in Space
And one more! A "People's Choice" award - I've started a poll, over here: http://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/70...
Just head on over and vote. Ask your friends to vote. Ask your enemies. The poll will run till Friday, at which point we're going to choose the writer whose haiku the most people enjoyed.
Cheers, and have a fantastic day!
-Aldous
