Chris Marshall | 52 comments I am wanting to spend the whole month of October coming up dedicated to nothing but the best horror stories. I have read a handful of horror entries, such as Stephen King's The Shining & The Mist, and The Strain Trilogy by Guillermo Del Toro.

Can I please get suggestions for my challenge?

message 2: by Chris (new)

Chris Marshall | 52 comments Thanks, Pam, I will add that to the list!

message 3: by Eileen (new)

Eileen Couple of my favorites Endurance and Afraid. One more off the top of my head The Pilo Family Circus, you'll be seeing scary clowns everywhere.

message 4: by Ctgt (new)

Ctgt 'Salem's Lot was my first and probably still my favorite King, but I really enjoyed "The Shining" and It.
I liked Red Dragon just as much as The Silence of the Lambs.
I read a fair amount of Clive Barker when I was younger, but he can be pretty gruesome.
Dan Simmons has quite a few horror books.
There's always the classic I Am Legend or Rosemary's Baby.
However, my favorite horror author is by far H. P. Lovecraft. I still get the creepy crawlies when I read his stories.

All good, especially Dracula. Have you read H.P. Lovecraft? Good collections out there.

message 7: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Thomas (benjaminthomas) For anybody that's interested, and has an e-reader, you can download the complete works of HP Lovecraft for free here:

I'm about 3/4ths of the way through this 1100 page collection. That could last for the month of October :)

message 8: by Laurel (new)

Laurel This isn't necessarily horror, but a book designed for October. Each chapter is a day of the month. I read it last year, and plan on re-reading it every year.

A Night in the Lonesome October by Roger Zelazny

Your welcom and I would have to add this one, Monster Hunter International (The entire Series) because I don't see it on the list, but I sure thought I recommended it already.

Read the review (mine) and it'll tell you how much fun I thought it was to read.

message 11: by Chris (new)

Chris Marshall | 52 comments How could I forget that one? I read another one of Larry Correia's books and liked it, so I'm sure I'll love MHI.

message 12: by Allison (new)

Allison (aquabel) | 33 comments I haven't read either yet, so can't say how good they are, but how about either Torment or The Sentinel by Jeremy Bishop (also known as Jeremy Robinson). I really like Jeremy Robinson's books, so likely these are good too.

Start with Pulse and it's a fun Chess Team Read.

message 14: by Allison (new)

Allison (aquabel) | 33 comments Yes I've read Pulse, and it was really good. I've read all the Chess Team books, Raising the Past, Antarktos Rising, Didymus Contingency, and really enjoyed them all. Have yet to read Kronos and the rest of the Antarktos Saga.

message 15: by Chris (new)

Chris Marshall | 52 comments I'm also a big Jeremy Robinson fan so I will check out Torment and/or The Sentinel.

Allison: Do the Chess Team books need to be read in order?

I thought they did, but, I'm not sure myself.

message 18: by Allison (new)

Allison (aquabel) | 33 comments Sorry for the late reply Lisa.

To answer your question, yes I'd recommend reading them in order. Pulse and Instinct are pretty much stand alone stories, however they do somewhat carry on one after the other in terms of character development. As well, I think Jeremy Robinson may somewhat tie them together with the later books/novellas.

I do an October Scare fest myself, Chris.

Do you like YA? I loved Lord Loss. Very scary and intense.

message 20: by Chris (new)

Chris Marshall | 52 comments I do like YA and I added Lord Loss to my TBR list.

Hope you like it!

message 22: by Chris (new)

Chris Marshall | 52 comments So I've got most of my books for October. I have Salems Lot, Monster Hunter International, Phantoms, Lord Loss, The Terror, Rosemary's Baby, and The passage. I can read HP Lovecraft online. I attempted to read the Passage earlier this year and got 2/3 through but the plot shifts to practically a whole mother story after the halfway point. Knowing this now, I will try to power through this time!

Sounds like you will have a fun October, Chris. I hope you will post on your progress.

I am getting my October reading list together as well.

WOW, very adventurist list.

Chris Marshall | 52 comments Definitely adding Wolf's Hour to the list, since it is the month of the read for October!

message 26: by Chris (new)

Chris Marshall | 52 comments *Crap, read of the month for October. I'm on muscle relaxers right now, don't mind me.

Hopefully nothing to serious. Feel better and enjoy the muscle relaxers!

Chris Marshall | 52 comments Hurt my back at work last week, on the road to recovery. Thanks Eileen!

message 29: by Chris (new)

Chris Marshall | 52 comments I just had to order Wolf's Hour through B & N online because my library has every other McCammon book EXCEPT Wolf's Hour. Not cool!

Chris, do you mind if others post their October scary reading on this thread? I have my own list and I wouldn't mind sharing my reading journey with others if you're cool with it?

Muscle relaxers make you feel really freaky. Don't like them! Hope you feel better, Chris!

message 32: by Chris (new)

Chris Marshall | 52 comments Thanks, Danielle! And yes anybody that wants to go right ahead and post their October reading posts.

Cool!

message 34: by Chris (new)

Chris Marshall | 52 comments I've finished Rosemary's Baby and just bailed on Salem's Lot. Rosemary's Baby was ok and I thought the ending was pretty hokey. Salems lot did have a few messed up parts from the point I gave up at, it was just boring me to tears.

message 35: by Chris (new)

Chris Marshall | 52 comments I just finished Lord Loss and it was great, thanks for the suggestion Danielle!

Glad you liked it, Chris! I haven't continued the series yet, but I'm looking forward to it.
