James Cox (authorjamescox) | 119 comments I tried to go for the Librarian Status but I never got an email or anything to indicate that I was accepted or reject or even in query.

Any idea's as to why?

Thanks!

lafon حمزة نوفل (lafon) | 3544 comments It usually takes 2 or so business days to be approved. Besides GR staff don't work on the weekends.

The system only notifies you if you are accepted as a librarian. There is no notification if you are not accepted.

Authors who can already use their author privileges to do everything their librarian status request indicates will not be granted librarian status, as there is no need. And any user whose librarian status request (or past editing history) indicates they plan to use the status is ways contrary to GR policies will not be granted librarian status.

Librarian status is a privilege, not a right.

message 5: by James (new)

James Cox (authorjamescox) | 119 comments I've never had any history with Goodreads. I've only joined a few months ago. I wanted to be a Librarian so I can change some information on my own books.

message 6: by lafon حمزة (new)

lafon حمزة نوفل (lafon) | 3544 comments James, because you are a Goodreads author you already can edit your own books.

message 7: by Amara (new)

Amara Tanith (aftanith) James wrote: "I wanted to be a Librarian so I can change some information on my own books. "

Authors don't need librarian status to do that.

message 8: by rivka, Former Moderator (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
Most of the few things authors cannot change on their own books are things which if changed would be a violation of Goodreads policy.

message 9: by James (new)

James Cox (authorjamescox) | 119 comments I wanted to change the 'characters' and add a book to the series but it says I need librarian status. That's why I applied but I haven't heard anything back. Should I apply again?

message 10: by rivka, Former Moderator (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
Specifying what you want to do that you cannot do with author status along does make an application for librarian status more likely to be accepted.

message 11: by James (new)

James Cox (authorjamescox) | 119 comments I'm confused. How do I go about changing that then?

Thank again everyone for you input!

message 12: by Krystal109 (last edited Aug 09, 2012 07:44PM) (new)

Krystal109 | 1086 comments Reapply with the specific things that you want to do and can't do with author status.

message 13: by James (new)

James Cox (authorjamescox) | 119 comments Okay, I'll give that a try. Thank you again!

message 14: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 963 comments If you're only interested in editing a few things about your book that you can't do, please just post them in the librarian's group and we will take care of it.

message 15: by Upasana (new)

Upasana (iupasana) | 1 comments I applied on 9th September and still no word. It was on the weekend though. I guess I haven't been approved?Or should I still wait to hear something? However, I would have loved to know for what reason I couldn't make it.

message 16: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5166 comments Upasana wrote: "Or should I still wait to hear something? However, I would have loved to know for what reason I couldn't make it. "

As far as we know, there is no time limit for processing applications.

I would bet that a very large number of people apply to be librarians and not everyone could possibly be accepted. There has to be some sort of limit or things would get totally out of hand. So it is entirely possible that someone would not be approved for no other reason than that there is no need for more librarians at this time.

Authors automatically have librarian status I believe.

Authors who have claimed their profiles and been granted Goodreads Author status have limited librarian privileges over their profile and books.

I didn't receive any kind of notice yet; happened to look at my profile and, poof!, I'm a librarian now. Don't ask me why, but that kind of made my day. :-)

Notification of librarian status is only sent via email.

Wait a while. If they weren't hiring a week ago not much is likely to have changed since then. Except Amazon, of course. Just forget it for a while.

message 26: by Clinton (new)

Clinton | 12 comments I didnt realize it took so long, I was approved like an hour or 2 after I applied. Keep your spirits up peeps, it might just be taking awhile, i imagine this must be a busy period for Goodreads.

I just got approved, so I think with them so busy it takes a bit longer.

message 28: by Gemma (new)

Gemma (madfruitbat) | 10 comments Glad to hear they're still accepting people - I was worried they might stop with the Amazon involvement. I applied a couple of weeks ago and haven't heard anything, but I'm still hoping.

It took 9 days for me to be approved.

message 30: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 2 comments I applied a second time when I didn't hear anything. I work for a publishing company and they want me to run the giveaways for the authors who don't have time to do it themselves. Don't they have to approve me for that purpose??

Librarians have no control over Giveaways, so you do not have to be a librarian to run one. Anyone can create a Giveaway using this link: http://www.goodreads.com/giveaway/new

There is a box there for a comment where you explain who you are/who you work for that is shown only to Goodreads, this would be the perfect place to explain you are doing it for authors publishing through your company.

Vicky wrote: "Librarians have no control over Giveaways, so you do not have to be a librarian to run one."

And as a general rule of thumb, if the only reason given in a librarian request is something that librarians actually cannot do, the request will not be approved.

Jess the Shelf-Declared Bibliophile (jessicalewis) | 56 comments I applied December 18th and haven't heard anything :( I'll keep my fingers crossed! I really hope I am approved!

Nucking Futs the Fire Fairy Book-a-holic (firefairyholic) | 348 comments if you haven't received any notifications yet try to apply again. if you can apply successfully, that means your previous application was denied. if you can't, then your application is still pending.

Does what you wrote when you were asked why you want to become a librarian affect if you will be chosen?

I would expect it to.

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok, two questions. One, what did you say, and two, what is a super-librarian?

Banjomike | 5166 comments Elliot wrote: "Ok, two questions. One, what did you say, and two, what is a super-librarian?"

I don't remember what I said! A super-librarian has a few extra abilities and is someone who is invited by the staff to be a super-librarian. You don't apply for it, although I bet that some people have done.

message 40: by Ilias (new)

Ilias Sellountos | 6 comments I have been a Goodreads Librarian for a while. One day, SOMEONE on Goodreads (who?) realized I have published a book, and CHANGED my username from 'Menthys' to my name as it appears on my books without my permission. I tried to adapt to this status. Now, suddenly, as I go to edit one of my own books (which is unreleased, but its cover has been changed) I get the notification that ONLY Librarians can delete covers - so someone suddenly decided I am NO LONGER a Librarian? You know, I take joy in adding the books of others and editing things if I see there is a mistake. I LOVE my Librarian status. It seems it is gone and I need it back.

Hi. You would need to contact staff about this. support AT goodreads DOT com

You must have applied for the Goodreads Author status yourself (by clicking on the "Is this you? Let us know" link at the bottom of the page).

Goodreads staff then merge your user profile with your author profile. That usually means that you can only edit your own books.

Goodreads authors are not allowed to delete cover images, because too many have abused this right in the past. Goodreads policy is never to delete cover images of published books. Of course the system can't distinguish between correct deletions and against-policy deletions.

If you post in the Book Cover Help folder, a librarian can delete the cover for you (if it has not been given out with ARCs either).

If you want to complain about losing your librarian status, you should do so by contacting staff: support (at) goodreads (dot) com

message 43: by Ilias (new)

Ilias Sellountos | 6 comments I did not apply for anything. I had posted a question about authors being able to use one account for being e.g. an author and another for being e.g. a translator.

The following day, I logged into Goodreads and my name had been changed. I NEVER applied for Goodreads Author status. I just logged in and found myself as such.

Well, librarians certainly can't register someone as a Goodreads author, so you should contact Support about this.

ETA I remember the thread: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Definitely contact Support.

Cynthia Parkhill (cynthia_m_parkhill) | 17 comments If anyone can shed light on who exactly approves a librarian, what that person or people are looking for, and how long it usually takes, I would also appreciate it. I, too, have submitted an application (more than one, as recommended in this thread).

Approvals are done by staff. Knowing more than one language helps, but apart from that librarians have no insight as to what staff are looking for.

If you can reapply, it means that your previous application was turned down.

It is also a good idea to look through the Librarian Manual and see how different edits are done: https://www.goodreads.com/librarian_m...

You can just start a new thread in this group and explain what needs to be edited.
