I'm always setting reading goals for myself, for the new year, for summer break, for the winter holidays, etc. But these goals have usually consisted of a number (100 in a year, or something like that), or a list of specific titles. Well, this year I've hit on something really ingenious (okay, it's not that amazing, but if you're a freak like me, it definitely qualifies as cool)! I'm going to attempt to read a book for every letter of the alphabet. I'm not sure what I'll do for X yet, maybe get my hands on an X-Men comic book. Anyway, since, as I've said, I think this idea has something distinctly cool about it, thought I'd share.

Keep us posted on how it works... and what you end up reading, I want to see what you choose for some letters -- it could get very difficult in the end.

So far my lists look like this-
Titles
C- Crispin: The Cross of Lead by Avi
E- The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm by Nancy Farmer (amazing!)
F- The Fellowship of the Ring by Tolkien
H- House of Many Ways by Diana Wynne Jones
N- Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind vol. 5 by Hayoa Miyazaki
T- The Trial and Death of Socrates by Plato
U- Unexpected Magic by Diana Wynne Jones
W- The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson
Authors
K- Keats, John- Lyric Poems
M- Millay, Edna St. Vincent- The Early Works
S- Sanderson, Brandon- The Hero of Ages
T- Twain, Mark- A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court
W- Walpole, Horace- The Castle of Otranto
I'm currently working on The Light of the Oracle for L, and I'll probably read Donna Jo Napoli's Zel for Z, and The Queen of Atolia for Q, but I'm not so sure about what I'll do for authors.
Z is for Roger Zelazny! or Timothy Zahn, although my vote, of course, goes with Zelazny.Q or Y for Quinn Yarbrough
or just Q for Quentin Tarantino.
I think this is a cool thing you're doing. I'd like to do it too, but I'd never make it. I have too many books to read as it is.
I'm not sure what I'll do for X yet, maybe get my hands on an X-Men comic book. There's always Xenocide.

Of course! I read Ender's Game a couple of years ago, but I haven't yet managed to read any of the others, though I keep saying I want to. Thanks!

Sarah wrote: "What a great idea! I may try this. Are you going to make a shelf for your alphabet reads? "I hadn't thought of that, maybe I will. If you do try it out, let me know what books you choose!
Caitrin wrote: "Awesome idea! I'll have to try it out next year :D"Yes, and I'll try it out when I'm not in grad school! :D
Hi, I am attempting something like this too! It seems so easy right now, but at the end I know its going to be a bit tough. Good Luck to all who are doing it too.
Maybe R.A.Salvatore will get wind of your "Z" problem and get an idea to write a prequel to the LoD. A story abaout Drizzt's father Zaknefain, who, from reading about him in Homeland, was somewhat conflicted himself. He could call it "Zaknefain, Sire to a Legend". Well... maybe not. ;2]
I love this idea. I'm part of the book club 144 Books in 2010, so this will be fantastic if I start to run out of ideas. Even if I don't, it'll get me reading books I normally might not. I also like the idea of creating a bookshelf to keep track of them since this will require a little planning. Thanks!
Excellent idea! I thought of trying something similar myself, but came to realise that such wide challenges don't work for me. Hope you'll make it though! Good Luck!
Like everyone else here asked, let us know what you choose. We might help!
Ach! The year's almost over and I haven't finished either of my alphabets--just a few letters shy on both. I guess I'll carry it into next year, and just finish when I finish. I'll post what I have done tomorrow.
