Moderators help manage a group by deleting posts, keeping topics and folders organized, enforcing rules, and if the group is private, accept members. It's more than just a title, it's really a comitment to develop the group.
Moderators can misuse their power by unjustly banning members, deleting the head mod (either removing them from the group or removing them as a moderator) or acting unreasonably.
If you are a head mod wanting to add other moderators, choosing assistant moderators can be hard, especially when you don't know anybody. I tend to not add any moderators because I handle my groups myself and don't need any help; others add all their friends as moderators. Moderators can misuse their power and not all of your friends are good moderator material so regardless of how many moderators you pick, make sure that you choose carefully. Choose moderators who are active, respectful, knowlegable, friendly, you are familiar with, and will help the group. I would not pick a moderator based on the number of comments, number of invitations, or who begged for it.
One of a moderator's major responsibilities is dealing with disrespectful or rule-breaking members. Dealing with members is often left to the head moderator, but assistant moderators can take apropreate measures as well. Depending on how bad the member was acting, it is custom to start by giving them a warning (the number of warinings is up to the mods). If the member doesn't improve, banning them is the last resort.
