Try The Froggitt Chain by Katharine Ann Angel... cracking read. Mystery. Set in NW England. A retired milkman throws away a bag containing stuff from his past, including a gold chain he took off a dead guy as a child. But illogical Hugo Quin finds the bag and decides to return it to its owner using the 'clues' inside. Very funny in some places. Great ending.
