I must say that I am guilty to have the Optimism Bias which refers to the cognitive bias of underestimating the likelihood of negative future events. I was overconfident that I could get a job right away since my current job no longer satisfies me. I was working to an I.T company as a desktop engineer for 4 years, I actually like the company that made me stays long. Even if the location is quite far from me, I did not mind it because I was happy working. Until one incident happened that pushed me to leave and file my resignation immediately without thinking what could be the result with such decision. I believe that there are a lot of opportunities out there that could satisfy my needs and maybe could make me happier. Days after, I got hired to other I.T company with higher salary, but weeks after I could feel the sadness missing my former colleagues. I can differentiate the tasks that I am more productive and useful with, the previous one than my current one. I honestly regretted my previous. Just because of a small problem, I jumped to an impulsive decision. But there's no turning back, and it’s impossible to turn back the time. What I can do now is to learn from my mistake and maybe learn to love the job. If I read this book prior to that situation, I could have paused for a while and evaluated the situation first.
I agree with the author’s statement to do other similar techniques to stop oneself from reacting on autopilot. A mindful pause before responding to a negative external stimulus is something that I will do in the future. I’ll give myself the time and space needed to cool down and make a more reasoned, slower response to the situation. This would help me carry on this message before deciding things for myself. So, don't fall to the trap of Optimism bias, one should learn and study what this is all about. ...more "
