In this first book in a many book series, and also the first in a trilogy, we get introduced to Fitz, six-year-old boy, the bastard son of the King-in-Waiting, as he gets brought to court where he must learn to live and fend for himself, then become a student of many trades including becoming, you guessed it, the royal assassin’s apprentice.

This novel focuses on his formative years, and ends when he is not quite an adult yet. This means that the pace is slower going than your typical modern fantasy story, and for that reason it might not be for everyone. We are in Fitz’s head and are truly immersed in the world with him, which perhaps adds to the slowness of it as he learns and stumbles along the way. I love books like these, and felt it has the markings of a new favourite series. The seemingly boring, unimportant details, clearly have been put there for the reader to come back to and ponder in later books, crumbs of foreshadowing that are so satisfying to me.

I appreciated how Hobb brought her characters to life, and it wasn’t just Fitz who was believable and well fleshed-out, but the rest of the cast as well. I hated some, wanted more of others, all through the eyes of Fitz, while still always being able to come to conclusions about them on my own as well. Although this is a fantasy novel, the world felt very real and it was easy to picture every room and setting Fitz entered, which really makes me love a book a whole lot more.
But I will admit, this was not always the most entertaining story, nor a perfect one. The first half of the book was particularly slow going, even though it was immersive and I did enjoy it. I sometimes felt frustrated by the author for teasing us with such a vast universe and keeping us in a contained area for a long time. There are probably a couple of minor plot points that are explained away as “I don’t know why or how it happened but it did” by Fitz, which is fine, but given the amount of care the story was given, those stand out a little more than they would in other novels.

Overall, this is a really great introductory novel into an epic fantasy series. I will not hesitate (or wait long) to pick up the second book, as I have grown attached to Fitz and can also tell we’re on the verge of bigger, better, grander things. I would recommend this to fantasy and historical fiction readers who like a slow-paced, character-focused read, that demands your attention and rewards it with many theories as to where the story might go, who we might meet next, and why. Historical fiction readers would appreciate the realistic aspects of this story, and the way the world is introduced to the reader that makes it easy to fall into. The magic in and of itself is not the main component of the story. It does become more important towards the end of the book, and it’s clear that it will be explored in many more details in the rest of the series. If you are a fantasy reader who enjoys magic-heavy books and a faster pace, with less attention to detail, then I think this might bore you a fair bit. ...more "
