What if you could time travel? What if you were able to go back in time and see famous people? In the sci-fi book Into the Dim by Janet Taylor, time-traveling is a real thing. Hope, the main character, is on a journey that will test her abilities and one that will find out the truth about many things. I think that this book was intriguing because I could not stop reading it.
Into the Dim is about Hope a girl who has a photographic memory. When her mom dies, Hope is devastated because her mom was the only one who understood her and helped her with her troubles. Later, she reluctantly goes to visit her aunt in Scotland. Here, she finally makes true friends for the first time in her life. Together, Hope and her newfound friends, Phobe and Collum, go back in time to search for something that is lost and is need of being found.
Throughout the story, there were enough descriptive details that help me understand what is happening but didn’t ruin the book. Each character is unique in their own way. Not one is the same. Hope is smart and unsure of herself. Phoebe is strong, inside and out, and she is Miss Sunshine. Collum is a determined man and a little guff. But through all their differences, they help each other and get through their trials. That is one of the important messages that I saw: Ignore one another's differences and work together to finish the job. Another important theme was to push aside the grudges that you hold against someone. Hope had to forgive her mom for keeping secrets that were important. Her mom tries to apologize and says “The two of you would have died. I should have told you, but…” (360). Later on, Hope thinks “Maybe ignorance is better. My mother probably thought she was protecting me” (368). Hope realizes her mom was only doing what was best for her daughter. She also has to forgive Bran, a handsome, cunning man. He tricks her in many ways but ends up doing what is right. Hope forgives him because, in the end, Bran saved her mom’s life and her friend's life. I agree with these themes because they make us closer to the people that we love.
I really like the way the author wrote the book for many reasons. Through the dialogue, it is easy to tell if the character is happy, sad, frustrated, etc. Also, I liked how he put historical figures in the book. While I am reading I am reading for fun and I end up learning something. Janet Taylor also uses antiquated English. For example, a nun says “ ...‘tis odd” (232) and Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine said “Good morrow…” (216) which no one says either of those anymore. The word choice goes with the period time, 1150. I don’t think that if she used the same words that we used today that it would have been any good. What I didn’t like was that there were a few curse words. I think that the story would have been just fine without them. That is my opinion.
Overall I think that “Into the Dim” by Janet Taylor was really well written. The way the author writes, I can understand what is happening and it keeps me interested throughout the whole story. Also, the style of language Janet Taylor uses is perfect for the setting of the book in mid-1100. Also, whoever may be reading this book can learn a lot from the themes. I think a book needs these things because without them no one would be reading the books because it would be of no interest. All those characteristics of the book make people like it.
