Starr does not think she has changed and to prove this she goes to one of their parties she does not normally attend. Starr does not know many people at the party but does run into an old friend of hers, Khalil. They got to talking and after a little bit into their conversation, they hear gunshots. Khalil offers to take Starr home to get them out of the situation. On their way home, they get pulled over and everything goes wrong. That night changed Starr's life forever because of one gunshot. This event shapes the rest of the book as Starr and other African Americans fight for their rights and fight for a better life for African Americans to live in.

The main themes of this novel are racism and discrimination. Whites stereotype African Americans as more violent people in certain/most situations. This is extremely important in the book because if Khalil was white, the whole situation would have gone differently but because Khalil is black, he is treated unfairly. Discrimination is shown as a perpetual cycle during this novel. It never ends.

I first really enjoyed how real the story felt as I was reading even though it is a fiction novel. The story was so interesting, I could not put my book down. It felt real because some of the events that occurred in the book have happened in our world today which made it easy to make connections with the book, making it easier to understand. Secondly, I liked that there was a wide range of emotion that was offered throughout the book. At the start of the book, emotions are normal and everything is going good. Then your stomach just drops and you start to become filled with anger and sadness and become anxious for the rest of the novel. My final like of the novel was the strengths each character portrayed, especially courage. The characters stood up for what they believed in and never stopped no matter what happened.

Overall, this story is one of a kind and truly hits the heart. I would recommend this novel for grade levels high school and up. If you enjoy empowering novels that tell inspiring, sad, but yet untrue stories, this is the book for you. "The Hate U Give" is a powerful reading that can impact you personally.
