In chapter 3, it focused on the topic of prewrite and how it is so important in writing. Making a prewrite will always make the final draft and revising easier and more manageable. Prewriting can make the thoughts within the final draft clearer and more precise. I really liked how this chapter provided different mini lessons that we could use when teaching our students prewrite. One of my favorites that I came across was the “Get in the Loop” mini lesson. This allows students to write non-stop for a period of time, and it’s an activity that allows them to put whatever they are thinking on to paper. I thought this activity would be super beneficial to get students thoughts flowing and ready to write a paper.

Rog Chapter 4:

In chapter 4, it focuses on the topic of adding detail and elaboration to writing. It’s so important to expand, embellish, and extend basic thoughts and ideas when writing. Elaboration is a key element in the development of specific ideas. In the middle of the chapter, it talks about using elaboration effectively and how to know which details to elaborate more on then others. They mention “listing versus layering”. When you layer in writing, it’s often-choosing key details and describing and developing them. This mini lesson helps students put their writing into another perspective, for example how their peers would read their paper, and from someone else’s point of view. Elaborating your writing brings out key details that draw the reading in, making them want to read more. It’s important to add multiple layers to your writing and adding details rather than listing off your major points in your writing.

Rog Chapter 5:
In chapter 5 of this text, it talks about researching and writing on informational texts. It talks about how informational writing can help students organize their thinking in different ways and structures. I think it’s important that students are writing about research topics that they find interesting or else they won’t find any joy in writing that paper. It will seem as more of a hassle and seen as something they dread doing. When reading this chapter it made me think about when I was in school and I hated writing so much because I was never writing about anything that I enjoyed.

Rog Chapter 6:
In chapter 6 of Marvelous Minilessons for Teaching Intermediate Writing, the main focus is about writing to persuade. Persuasive writing is important for students to learn because it helps students learn to reason and helps guide them in developing logical and rational support ideas. It gives the writer the oppurtunity to show their point of view and allow others to read it. This chapter gave an example of a sixth graders persuasive writing about why they hate detentions. It also shows how the writing example included all six traits. This is a good thing to show your students before having them complete their own writing because it gives them an idea of what they are expected to do.

Rog Chapter 7:

Chapter 6 in “Marvelous Mini lessons for Teaching Intermediate Writing”, the main topic focus is about writing to persuade. It talks about how persuasive writing helps students to learn to reason and guides them in developing logical and rational support for their ideas. Persuasive writing helps students see different points of views in writing and gives them the oppurtunity to be the reader and see different views. I think persuasive writing is such a great tool for student to learn and for them to learn to realize whether they agree or disagree on a variety of different topics. It also gives them the oppurtunity to use their student voice and write something they agree upon. In this chapter, it also goes into depth about how writing persuasive writing includes adding a what, why, and how do you know. It allows the students to really write down all their thoughts and explain them.

Rog Chapter 8:
Chapter 8 in “Marvelous Mini Lessons for Teaching Intermediate Writing”, the main topic focus is about having success on the test. In the first half of this chapter, it touches on good test preparation and what that can look like. When writing a paper, planning, writing a draft, revising and editing is a major piece of the writing process. Researching and giving yourself a good amount of practice is the best thing you can do to prepare yourself for a writing test. Later in the chapter, it talks about budgeting your time and how it can provide students with more practice in the planning, drafting, and correcting process within their writing. The writing process needs time to edit and revise because that’s how we make our writing better. So I really liked how this chapter touched a little bit on that topic. ...more "
