Black and white by Paul Volponi was a very good story that I could not put down. Have you ever been in a situation where you knew the right thing to do was but still didn’t know what you should do? Well in this story that’s exactly what one of the main characters Eddie experienced. This story is a good representation of what can happen when 2 best friends clash due to their decisions. I liked this story a lot because I can relate to it as a high school student. I would rate the book 4 stars.

In Long Island, New York, Eddie who is white, and Marcus who is black are best friends and do everything together. Eddie and Marcus attend the same high school and are both star athletes for the basketball team. Marcus’s mother raises Marcus and his sister Sabrina by herself and struggles with money so Marcus never has money given to him from his mother. Eddie lives with his Mother, Father, and sister Rose they are a little more financially stable than Marcus’s family but not wealthy. Marcus and Eddie need money to get new shoes for basketball. With their tight schedule of school and basketball, they don’t have time to get jobs. They come up with a plan to rob people for extra money with a gun that belonged to Eddie’s grandfather before he passed away. One day things go south and a man gets hurt. Marcus and Eddie’s friendship is tested through the story as one of them is charged with a crime and the other has a better chance of not being convicted.

I loved reading this book one thing that drew me in to keep reading was the suspense of what would happen next. One thing that moved me was that even though Eddie and Marcus have different skin colors they don’t care about it. When everyone around them thinks they would. despite the racism in the world Eddie and Marcus became best friends and stayed best friends through the hardships they faced together. I feel the theme of this book is racism. Eddie and Marcus get through a lot together and become best friends despite their skin color.

I enjoyed this book by Volponi a lot and I think I would like other books by him. Overall this book deserved the 4 stars I rated it because it did so many things very well. I would recommend this book to High school students and people who enjoy a good quick story. ...more "
