The time period also affects the laws defending what’s right or wrong. Candide is the main character his most prominent character traits are exactly as his name says, he is innocent and naive. Candide just wanders the world with his many companions in hope of finding his one love, the fair Cunegonde. He is unique, because of his strange mentality from start to finish, he is always thinking about the negative to instantly turn around and talk about the positive. Pangloss is Candide’s teacher and joins him on his travels as they wander the world. Pangloss’s most prominent character traits are that he is an optimist and that he has a tendency to think much like a priest. His motivation is Candide and his optimism. He is unique because he likes to think very philosophically, making him always question himself. Cunegonde is the Baron’s daughter and is Candide’s lover. Her most prominent character traits are that she is very pessimistic. Her only reason for even moving is trying to find Candide. What makes her unique though, is that her pessimism hinders her in everything she does making her an easy target for everything. Candide most wants Cunegonde, but he can never get her because he either gets punished by the person that has her, or he has to leave himself, just everything in the world stops him from achieving Cunegonde.
I thought the book was pretty bad because the book felt very fast and they didn’t flesh out in part of the book in full, and the character that ever really felt important was Candide. Even though Candide has so many traveling partners, none of them had any real importance. The place that they were in never got more than just a few pages, so all the settings were far from being needed. I feel like the only thing that was handled well was the plot of the book was pretty good it just needed the characters and setting fleshed out. Nonfiction is not my favorite style of writing, and this book definitely did not change that, it’s just not very appealing and the story is something that I can just research and I don’t have to read the whole book about it.
The type of person that would enjoy this is if people don’t like research and they still want to learn about something. I would think people between the ages of 40 and up would enjoy this book but younger than that I just don’t think people would like this. I mean if you have the hobbies of collecting or learning of the past you may enjoy this but I honestly don’t know. If you have to research about the 1700s maybe this will be good. No, I would not read this again it was absolutely terrible for me, because of the very poor setting and characters. ...more "
