"Book 8 is probably my favorite so far as all of the sudden it turns into a telenovela with Natasha Rostov being the naive girl who is being conned by Anatole Kuragin, as the cad.

Book 9 features Napoleon as an egomaniacal despot who does everything he can to start a war with a peaceful nation. To say that the people of Greenland would find this prescient is an understatement."

Fredrik Backman
“... seeing as dads like teaching their sons things, because the moment we can no longer do that is when they stop being our responsibility and we become theirs.”
Fredrik Backman, Anxious People

Tim Murphy
“It had never occurred to me that she was perhaps trying to hold on to her Blackness in a world where we denied her that merely because she defied our stereotypes of what a Black person should be, that perhaps she was dreaming of a future where she and other brainy Black people could discuss Black literature together free from the puzzled gaze of white people whose picture they didn’t fit into.”
Tim Murphy, Speech Team

Terry McMillan
“At some point, we need to be honest with ourselves and do what excites us instead of what looks good on paper.”
Terry McMillan, I Almost Forgot About You

Jimmy Juliano
“It’s just that, it’s not about the monster at all, really. It’s about people. No one wants to be the one to do things differently, because this is just life up here. It’s our culture. And us kids go along with it, because this is the world we live in. And we’ve been warned our whole lives to keep our mouths freaking shut.”
Jimmy Juliano, Dead Eleven

Tim Murphy
“You might be left to distract or soothe yourself with the outlier possibility that the other person had been kidnapped or struck by a car or lightning, or had perhaps inadvertently fallen into a giant hole in the ground on their way to you. But mostly you would just be thrown back on yourself, left with the extra-ness of your own anticipation, time, and energy that suddenly had no container. The moment felt existential, as though all your life you’d been showing up to find people who weren’t there and had never had any intention of being there.”
Tim Murphy, Speech Team
