It's a story about prevail and the will of the human mind. The story takes its time to really pick up (that is, for a 127 page book), but the author doesn't waste a second of it. The first couple chapters are spent on getting to know the old man and his interests. In these chapters, the old man proves to us he is a compassionate and caring person, but does not shy away from showing his struggle. I think this book is a must read for anybody.

The way the old man describes his life sleeping on the floor of a shack and seeing the stars through the cracks in his roof at night is beautiful, and also foreshadows the main plot of the story. How he is consistently being pushed down and being hit with new obstacles, yet having a rather bright view on the situation. I think this is where hemingway’s style of simplicity aids the theme of will and prevail. The way he describes just little injuries as painful by having the old man complain about them and have him really try to ignore the pain, is far more effective than describing the injury and how grusom or painful it is. The author gives the old man various ways of forgetting about the pain, whilst also giving character development like thinking of a memory or wondering how his favorite baseball team is doing.

The old man's dialogue is always short and to the point, but also tells the reader multiple things at once. Whether that be how the old man is feeling, what he’s thinking, or what his next plan of action is. The way he speaks is also quite mesmerizing, you truly do believe a wise old man wrote the words he is saying. The choice of having a narrator gives off a sort of mysterious feeling to the old man, only getting brief glimpses into his internal battle, having the perspective of the narrator also makes us pity him just a bit more. I believe if the perspective was switched to the perspective of the old man, a whole layer of the book would be lost, I feel like the old man would just seem like a loser, rather than just unfortunate. This book couldn't be anything but genius. ...more "
