Irritated and delighted me in equal measure. The characters are uniformly repellent, but somehow I kept reading and was glad I did inthe end. Their downfall somehow shone bright lights back onto the story and what had seemed to me to be indulgent, duIrritated and delighted me in equal measure. Their downfall somehow shone bright lights back onto the story and what had seemed to me to be indulgent, dull and irrelvent suddenly clicked into place as a worthwhile satire. The writing goes from high elegance of Henry James, the book's grey eminance, to the really dire. Quite an acheivement but a flawed one....more
