System Collapse follows Murderbot after the events of Network Effect as it joins ART and its crew on a mission to a planet that the Barish-Estranza corporation has some questionable plans for. Murderbot is also dealing with a memory issue that is hindering its performance as a security consultant.

While this wasn’t my favorite Murderbot book, I still had a great time reading it. Martha Wells continuously writes fun books with mysterious plots, strong character development, and exciting action sequences. Murderbot has developed a lot since the first book and now that it has a better connection with humans and an understanding of what it wants it is dealing with more human problems, like trauma. The exploration of trauma and how it affects Murderbot’s ability to do its job and thus creates more anxiety was handled really well. The friendship between Murderbot and ART was so good (as always). I love how they constantly bicker but care for each other so deeply. There were a lot of human characters in this book and most of them were either underdeveloped or forgettable but that isn’t uncommon in this series. Some of ART’s crew, like Iris, grew on me and I’m interested to see how Murderbot connects with them in the next books. Mensah and Amena are my favorite human characters in the series and I wish they were more present in this book. The plot was more elaborate than the previous books but I found it less engaging in some parts. However, I did like how Murderbot used its love for media to help resolve part of the conflict. There were some fun action sequences and tense moments but I still had a hard time fully connecting with the story.

Overall, I loved the exploration of Murderbot’s mental health and friendship with ART but I thought the plot wasn’t as captivating as some of the previous books. I’m excited to see where ART takes Murderbot next. I would give this book a rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars. ...more "
