While I can understand to an extent what these people are saying I also disagree. (But of course everyone has the right to their own opinion 😅) I think this book is likely going to be crucial in really understanding Kingdom of Ash because a lot of questions are answered regarding the larger aspects of the overall plot. Like Maeve’s true title and her background, how the Valg can be defeated through Yrene’s healing, etc. Of course a little patience for these answers was required since most took place near the end of the book. Anyway, on the topic of Chaol… Let me just say that I have not liked this chap since the end of HoF and the start of QoS. He annoyed the piss out of me and although I was infatuated by him in ToG and CoM he became a nuisance. Like I didn’t even care when he became paralyzed to be honest. Therefore after the utter perfection of EoS I almost considered skipping ToD since I had zero interest in reading a 700 page book about 2 characters I didn’t give a damn about. But I kid you not within the first 20 or so pages, ya girl folded and I was instantly in love with him once more. I think the lack of his perspective throughout the series is why I hated him so much… We never got to see his internal conflict. I also really started liking the paralyzed trope. Like Jake Sully in Avatar, we see a James Bond-esque man i.e. stoic and aloof, being forced into this vulnerable state and having to ask for help and talk about his feelings - which sounds dumb but I swear it’s good. God I even started liking Nesryn by the end of this. Her whole thing with that dreamy guy Sartaq really shaped things up for her. And Falkan?? We need more of him! Their whole adventure with the spiders was giving me The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug vibes and I was digging it. The development and writing of this whole story was really good (not that I’m an astute writer or reader but that’s just how I feel). I think the whole conflict of convincing the Khagan to align with them was accurate in that they didn’t just surrender there armies for Aelin’s disposal in a heartbeat. (Like a certain pirate at Skull’s Bay). And the climax of the novel had me unable to put it down. I mean, clearly, I read it in 5 days. May I also mention somewhat ashamedly, that it was actually kind of refreshing getting away from Aelin and her dysfunctional court for a change?? Get some new interesting characters in there and not talk about Aelin for a few pages? Not that I’m an Aelin hater, I would die for that woman, but still. I’m almost dreading re-entering that mess. Anyway that’s all. Stay safe, and don’t get possessed by a Valg demon. Kisses 😘 ...more "
