The author tells his story and includes all of the hardship and sacrifice that his family had to go through. They did this to thrive in the harsh conditions that they lived in. The author was able to create, “a rocketing real-life narrative.”(Baltimore Sun). The author was able to make this book readable and comprehensible for all audiences, not only adults. This book not only had a fantastic plot about two boys and their struggles but a heartwarming story about one boy who made it out of, “the hood '' successfully!

In the story, it talks about a successful African American boy who came from nothing and made something. The other story is about a boy who is now serving life in prison for a murder charge. It goes through both of their lives, the good and bad parts especially. The book is trying to show you how important decisions are, especially when they don’t seem right. What I liked about this story was the constant change. This kept the book interesting and I never turned a page and thought it was boring. Another thing that I liked that most people might not like was a family drama. This kept me engaged throughout everything. Most people try to zone out that stuff. However, in this book, you can’t do that because you would miss an important plot. The biggest thing that I took away from this book was the lesson of don’t take what you have for granted. If TOWM was in my position he would be taking advantage of it. Which made me think, I need to be better. Just like he said, “should I have stayed there?”(TOWM pg. 121). One thing in particular that I found interesting was the way that the author described prior instances in TOWM life and tied them to instances later on in the book. This allowed me to relate to the beginning of the book. This book was amazing mostly because of how well the plot was displayed and played out. But one thing about the plot that I didn’t like was the constant back and forth. Now, when saying that it does not take away from the phenomenal book.

I would recommend this book to all audiences, not just adults. This book contains real-life situations that can show the bratty teen generation what real perseverance is. The author did such a good job of sneaking lessons and examples of leadership, love, and loyalty in this book. The best quote that sums it all up in the book for me was, “ it’s up to us, all of us, to make a way for them.” ( TOWM pg.180). If you are looking for a book that is a fun read, then this is not the book for you. However, if you are looking for a book that can change the way you think and your point of view on things, then this is the book for you. The final thing that pushed this book over the top for me was the way the author kept changing supporting details and environments. This made me appreciate what my parents do for me even more. If you wanna feel this way, and truly want a new point of view on the world, then by this book immediately. ...more "

He wanted to teach us those values while creating a story that painted a perfect picture in our mind of what it was like back then. The story behind the book is about a boy, his name is David and he goes through problems with his family. He goes through the struggle of growing up in that time while dealing with loyalty issues and family problems.

This, in my opinion, is one of the best books that I have ever read. It was a book that had a ton of plot twists and action. In the book, you will get one side of Uncle Frank and then a chapter later you will get a whole new part. In this book, you will never know what is going to happen next and even when you think that you have figured it out the next page throws a curveball at you. Another reason why I like this book is the small personal details. Larry Watson could have easily left out small details and never really painted us a picture of what it was like. He did though, he made sure that we knew and saw everything in our mind. Without this, I think it would have been a lot harder to understand the book. If I could change one thing in this book I would change the ending. Now, I am not gonna spoil it but it needed more plot and details.
I would recommend this book in a heartbeat, and I rate this book five stars. If you are looking for a book with a great plot, action, and drama then this is the book for you. Even if you aren’t looking for any of those, this book has everything that makes a book good. I would also recommend this book because I could sit down and read this book for hours. You could sit down and re-read this book over and over and you would not get bored at all. I think that is why I enjoyed it so much. Take it from a person who does not like to read but in the case of this book I now have something to look forward to re-reading. Finally, the thing that I truly love the most about this book is how it allows my imagination to run wild. This book had me playing a movie in my head while reading it, no other book has ever done that to me. Overall, I think that you should read this book, if you decide not to, I bet it will come on your, “ what you’d like" list. ...more "

I know that Frank committed suicide and that it was part of the reason that they left, but I never thought that Gail would have a quick death. The book was written by Fredrik Backman, he sends very important messages throughout the book. These messages involve how drugs, egos, alcohol, and crime can affect a person not only physically but mentally as well. The author did a great job of combining hockey and everyday life. He shows young aspiring players a lesson of what talent can do to someone’s head. Not only that, but he shows what it can do to the people around him. This book comes with one very serious accusation and crime that is committed. This book not only has lessons and messages in it, but it also has a story that needs to be taken to heart. These types of crimes happen every day and some horrible people walk away untouched. Be ready to jump in headfirst and read until the wee hours of the morning!

This was one of the most impressive and complicated books I have read. What I mean by complicated is the author's use of foreshadowing. One thing that you cannot do in this book is assumed. The author's foreshadowing can lead you the wrong way and get you messed up. To add to this, the author's use of plot change and foreshadowing made this book a very difficult read for myself. This being said, it is the only bad or, “bump in the road.” Otherwise, this book is fantastic! Now, my review might be a little biased because I am a hockey player. But I say this with all honesty, read this book! It is such a great read because the author does three key things. He ties drama, athletics, and crime all into one town. Any athlete, drama fanatic, or crime enthusiast would leap for this book. With all of this being said, I have been very vague. Yes, the plot is fantastic but the author's ability to create characters that draw you in is what makes this book from a 4 star to a 5 star.

If I had to recommend this book to a certain audience or in general, I would 100%! When I say that I would recommend this book I mean to a more mature audience. I think that this book would be a good read for 8th graders and above. Due to the crimes, alcohol, drugs, and other content it would take a more mature person to read and understand it. With all this said, this book is one of the best books I have ever read. Even if they changed the sport and it wasn’t hockey it still would be a great book. The way the authors tie life as it is together in this book makes it so much better. I would compare this book to watching a movie. While you're watching this he turns on a movie in your brain and it allows you to sit back and enjoy. This is not the book you dread reading because you, “have to.” This is the book you dream of reading. This is why I would give Fredrik Backman’s book a 25 out of 5 stars. Now that I have a copy of this book, I will give it to my parents to read because I enjoyed it so much. For my sister, she is going to have to wait a couple of years! ...more "
