After moving to the U.S., he graduated from high school and later earned his medical degree, when he began to practice medicine while also writing novels, including The Kite Runner. The Kite Runner depicts the struggles of Afghan people who experience hardships resulting from the Soviet-Afghan War and, later, the Taliban. The story’s narrator is Amir, an Afghan Muslim with a tough childhood who has a passion for writing and reading books. Through reading this book, I learned about Afghan culture and also learned life lessons.
Before reading The Kite Runner , I had limited exposure to Afghan culture and values. Through reading this book, I was able to learn about the country’s wars, food, religion, and family life. I believe that I am now more well-rounded and knowledgeable as a result. In the novel, Hosseini vividly depicts the hardships, and the joys, that can be found in Afghanistan. Specifically, I was surprised to learn about the broken family life that many Afghan families experienced as a result of the war; Amir noticed that “hardly any of [the beggars] sat with an adult male - the wars had made fathers a rare commodity in Afghanistan” (TKR, P. 265). Before I read this book, I did not consider how severely wars, such as the Soviet-Afghan War, could impact daily life and families.
In addition to learning more about life in Afghanistan, I also learned valuable life lessons. The Kite Runner has many lessons, but one that I felt was especially significant was the idea of forgiveness. Throughout the novel, Amir struggles with his relationship with his family and, later, with Sohrab’s hospitalization. Amir considers the nature of forgiveness and ponders that perhaps “forgiveness budded, not with fanfare of epiphany, but with pain gathering its things, packing up, and slipping away unannounced in the middle of the night” (TKR, P. 388). In this scene, Amir begins to realize the complexity of emotions, specifically forgiveness, as he considers his relationships with Sohrab and Baba. Forgiveness is not an easy process, and it is one that takes time. As Amir thinks about forgiveness, I also reflected on the role of forgiveness in my life.
For its meaningful story and the lessons it teaches, this book is one that I would highly recommend to anyone. I learned important historical events in Afghanistan that I had not been well-versed in and realized the significance of being empathetic towards others. Furthermore, as citizens of South Korea, my family experienced firsthand the ill effects of the Korean War and Vietnam War; as I read The Kite Runner, I related the experiences of Amir and his family in Afghanistan to those of my own family and ancestors. With its diverse lessons and themes, I believe this book can be insightful for anyone who reads it. ...more "

"I finished the book. This book was not fun but it was an inspirational book. I was able to learn about Afghan culture and Afghanis life. I was able to relate my family's experiences in Korean War. I learned Afghanistan must be a safe country. I was able to understand the refugee's perspective on the current situations. This book was well recommended.
