In fact, men are unable to survive the harsh life. (I had never really thought about where or how salt came to be and the picture portrayed is that is back-breaking, never-ending, unreliable work.)

In Prospect, it is believed that the Gilly women use the salt as a magical power, that they are witches, and yet they rely on the power of the salt to predict their future. To shun the salt is to bring bad luck upon one's self; but the wealthy Turner family wants everyone to do just that...for reasons of their own.

This is the story of two sisters, estranged for many years. It is the story of one man who is dangerous and ruthless. It is about fighting for what you have and leaving behind what you can't have. It is the story of a feud that has gone on for years and it is the unraveling of the mystery behind that feud.

It was a dark story from beginning to end. I put the book aside several times for several reasons. One was that at time the story seemed to drag on and I just lost interest. Another was that I could see disaster coming on the horizon...like watching terrible storm clouds build and come closer and closer and I wasn't sure I was ready for it. When the time came for all to come out in the open, it wasn't quite as I had predicted but close enough.

There were no moments of lightness or joy in the story even as the story came to a dramatic end. I still felt empty and sad and for the fact that the book did leave me with a surprise ending and some kind of emotion, I can say that I liked the book. I didn't like any of the characters except older sister Jo and I didn't like the length of time it took to tell the story, but I did enjoy the unique setting and the fact that it was written so well that I could see the salt marshes, I could feel the blisters on my hands and the ache in my back, and I could feel the pain and determination of the main character, Jo Gilly. ...more "
