tillie hellman said: " i know i’m always saying I LOVED THIS BOOK and THIS BOOK IS THE BEST BOOK EVER and yeah i truly believe i can say that about like 50 books a year and be correct… but anyways I LOVED THIS BOOK AND IT WAS THE BEST BOOK EVER. i just… love jews. jew for i know i’m always saying I LOVED THIS BOOK and THIS BOOK IS THE BEST BOOK EVER and yeah i truly believe i can say that about like 50 books a year and be correct… but anyways I LOVED THIS BOOK AND IT WAS THE BEST BOOK EVER. i just… love jews. jew for jew books are even better. and when the jewishness is so built into the story in a way that a goy could never write,,, it makes me so happy. one of the mcs is orthodox which i’m like so sure i’ve never read before in a queer book (tangent, i was thinking about how the chosen is kinda fruity and how, despite my grandparent’s friendship with chaim potok, i’ll never be able to tell him that i think it is (he passed away before i was born)). anyways i really loved the depiction of judaism. especially this one scene which no spoilers but it made me GRIND ear to ear. i texted marianna about it and she was like “i never in a million years could have predicted that’s why you were smiling” but to me it was so perfect, so good. anyways i could go on forever about the judaism in this book but i’ll also say i loved the amount of baseball, it wasn’t as intrinsic to the plot as casey’s past books but it was still present and still added nice stakes in the sense of “bro works in a conservative industry and is trying to come out” i loved the fake dating element, especially the “paying akiva to be his boyfriend” bc that always adds fun complications and we sure saw those. i loved akiva’s writing stuff, it was so cool and fun! a great depiction. i looooooooooved both characters, they were so rich and loveable and real and worked so well with each other while also having good conflicts. i just loved this book. the conclusion was great and so was the glossary (i was teheing in there too). i really enjoy casey’s voice and mind and this book feels like (tho tbf i haven’t read the others in a hoooot sec) her best work yet. but yeah, what a great time and i hope she keeps writing more jew for jew baseball books!!!!! because i am HERE for it!!!!!! ...more "
