I think the first time I had been in such a hurry to read the story that I zoned out or skimmed some of the more informational parts in favor of getting to more dialogue. The amount of insightful details I either missed or forgot from my first read is amazing. Even though I knew all the major plot points and the element of surprise was gone, this book still had the same emotional impact on me. I was just as excited/giddy and sad/devastated as I was before. I rated this book 4 stars last year, but I think a book that’s not only just as good but even better during a reread deserves more stars, so I’m bumping my rating up to 5!

This book was a wild ride and I can’t even begin to write my own version of a synopsis, so I’m just going to jump into the review. House of Earth and Blood is a fun and addicting introduction to the Crescent City series. My eyes felt like they were going to fall out of my head after I flew through this book in a 24 hour period.⠀

This book is crazy long and overwhelming. The first third is full of giant info dumps. Names, places, and concepts are getting dropped left and right. It was so tempting to skim and easy to zone out while reading these sections. Despite the amount of info being thrown our way I was totally confused about some aspects of the story and I may need to reread in the future to better understand this urban fantasy world Maas has created.⠀

I loved the characters. They all served their individual purposes well. Bryce is a badass queen and I love her. Her grief and her healing journey felt real and meaningful. Above everything else I loved the friendships in this book. Bryce’s friendship with Danika was so special and heartbreaking. Her bond with Lehabah, Syrinx, and Ruhn also melted my heart. I love how she became friends with Hunt before he was a love interest. They had great chemistry and I loved their slow burn romance, though I hate how we were kind of cockblocked in the end. ⠀

While far from perfect, I loved so much of this book. The bombshell after bombshell of revelations in the last 200 pages made pushing through all the confusing bits worth while. I think this book could have been a bit shorter and more cohesive, but it was a great start to this series. Check TWs before reading. ...more "
