Reread in 2025: It is in fact becoming a movie, and the trailer dropped yesterday. Readers of this marvelous (AMAZE AMAZE AMAZE) story are pretty divided about the efficacy of the trailer. Some claiming that certain key plot points revealed in the 3 minute video ruin the whole story for those that haven't read/won't read it. Others put up their hands immediately to shout "Don't watch this if you want to read the book, read it first!", while the rest (myself included) are pleased with how the filmmakers edited it and revealed what they had to.
I wanted to reread this to do a deeper analysis and better understand why so many fanboys are shouting at strangers on the internet that the story they say they love has been destroyed, that the emotional payoff they worked for by reading or listening to the audiobook has been stolen from future moviegoers. After blasting through the audiobook once more, it seems that those upset at the trailer are feeling a sense of protectiveness over the story and only want for viewers to get the same beats that they experienced, as it was unraveled to them. While I understand their frustration, I would like to point them to the casual moviegoer who just wants a fun film.
I played the trailer for my dad, a man who doesn't watch many movies but absolutely LOVED ones like Interstellar, a deeply interesting adventure that unfolded with tension and reveals so exciting and heartbreaking you would immediately want to watch the film again after it ends.
He knows nothing about the book, and giggled at the carefully curated moments in the trailer. Not ONCE did his reaction turn to "well there goes the whole story, what's the point of watching it now", he finished watching and quickly said "That looks like a RIDE! When does it come out?"
SEE? The story, however briefly introduced to him, was enough of a hook and pull with the controversial elements included to make him want to know more. There's a Not Zero chance he'd read the book before seeing the movie, but it's pretty darn close.

All of that to say, this story is precious to so many for good reason. Andy Weir is a master at his craft. It would be a shame for anyone to be put off from either reading the book or seeing the movie because someone was too protective of their own signular experience with the story.
