From book one, she enraged me with her stupid actions aimed to hurt everyone surrounding her. After this book, which explored some reasons for her behavior, her character has definitely grown on me. However, I still think that those reasons did not justify her actions in the former books, especially the first, with Nesta endangering her youngest sister and risking her whole family to starve simply because she waited on her father to do something. Pretty dull reasoning here.

Regardless of these events in the past, the development she went through in this book was captivating to follow. What I loved about this part particularly: her friendship/sisterhood with Emerie and Gwyn and this whole plot about the Valkyries. Because what's even better than the badass fighters known as Illyrians? Right, a bunch of women who can do the same. Two of them winning the Blood Rite overdid it tremendously however – I mean, the bar was set pretty high with only Rhysand, Cassian and Azriel having reached the top for ages. You can't tell me that you are able to win this after just a few months of training, regardless of male/female or weapons available.

A few plot points were placed too obviously in my opinion, from Nesta discovering the forgotten tales of the Valkyries in the library or the unfortunate encounter with this Illyrian brute in Emerie's shop, whom we meet again in the finale – quite unsurprising. The "main plot", if we would like to call it by that, was not really put forward. Instead, our Night Court gang just waited for the queen to make a move, which was convenient for the training arc by the way. I mean, this queen did not pose a threat as big as the Cauldron, but still – I felt that everyone was just chillin' and waiting for a small disaster to arrive.

I liked that the other characters from the former books were given some "screen time" as well, with the big highlight of Feyre bearing a child. The buildup to this event could have been a bit more prominent though. Nesta finally sacrificing something of herself to save everyone in the end was a bit over the top as well, but I can absolutely live with that outcome since it was necessary to conclude her overall development. Her losing her powers following this event is an appropriate price for this I would say.

And just a few words on Nessian: it was obvious that those two were mates as well, but the story did evolve in a beautiful and not-too-romantic way, with several fall-backs and problems they had to face. But since I absolutely adore Feysand, this love story seems a bit bland in comparison. But them finally admitting their relationship in the end was just as beautiful, especially through Cassian's super cute Solstice gift.

Also, how sweet was the House of Wind caring for Nesta? I think this played a big role in her recovery when no one else could get through to her. ...more "
