The book includes 10 different technologies like space travel, augmented reality, fusion power, asteroid mining, robotic construction, augmented reality, synthetic biology, bio printing, and even artificial intelligence interfaces. The chapters are organized on how success can change the world along with potential problems or concerns that can result in this technology. The authors also include the economic and political implications on how these technologies can change the world. Zach and Kelly Weinersmith set out to tackle a wide range to topics that are separated into sections. Augmented reality was a topic discussed by the authors. Weinersmith (2019) describes augmented reality as a surgeon projecting your MRI scan onto your body while he/she does surgery. This can allow a surgeon to make smaller and more precise cuts. Augmented reality (AR) is also described as an opportunity to remake the world the way it is in our imagination. Reconfigurable houses is another topic presented, one that is not heard of often among new emerging technologies. The Weinersmiths describe this as “We are already used to the idea that Google knows what we want to search for, that Facebook suggests favorite memories, and that Amazon gives us better gift ideas than we can think of for ourselves. Having a house that responds to you personally by automatically reconfiguring itself or adjusting color, sound, temperature—a house that is warmth and softness when you’re feeling blue and cool quiet when you want to sleep—that is something we could get into (2019). Reconfiguration homes are like “smart homes” according to the description from Zach and Kelly Weinersmith. The book also discusses moments of conflict or issues with certain technologies. On the topic of laser ignition Weinersmith states that, “rockets basically work by firing hot stuff out the back. The hotter it fires, the more of a boost you get per volume of propellant. One way you might get things really hot would be a super-high-powered laser onboard to zap the fuel to extremes of heat. But this would weigh so much that it wouldn’t be worth it” (2019). Overall this book was easy to read as the language was fair to understand, and taught me about new emerging technologies I have never heard about before. The authors seem highly knowledgeable in the subject matter and are qualified to speak on the topics of emerging technologies. Their discussion about the positive and negatives on a subject matter show that they are not biased towards any of these technologies.
