Reading the same story through Edward’s perspective was so much fun! Though the story is the “same” you gain a lot of new insights about all the characters, not just Edward. You learn more about Charlie, Carlisle, Esme, Rosalie (I think Stephenie is a little harsh on Rose though), Emmett, Alice, Jasper and even Renée. Oh, and of course Bella!

Twilight is written from Bella’s perspective. And naturally, she doesn’t really discuss her great qualities. She’s not a narcissist. Seeing her from Edward’s eyes made her so likable. I like her in the Twilight series already, but seeing what Edward sees & hearing what he hears gives you a lot of insight into her character! Her likes & dislikes. Her opinions on things. Why she acts a certain way, etc. Things you don’t get from Twilight.

Edward’s self-loathing can be a little trying at times, but I get where it comes from. I just wanna grab him by the shoulders and say, “Shut up! We all love you!” But he’s has 90 years of struggle, so that’s not easily let up, of course.

Also, I don’t really love how Stephenie portrayed Bella’s HS friends. Yeah, I know teenagers can be jealous and horny, but they’re not THAT bad. She really made Mike seem like such a dirty villain & Jessica to be such a brat. I’m just gonna ignore that though and love those characters for their silly teenagery. This also could be mostly Edward’s feelings toward them…but yeah. There’s that.

A lot of people argue that there’s no need for this book since we already have Twilight. As a Twilight fan, I disagree. I love all the characters & being able to dive deeper with them brought me a lot of happiness. Plus I love book #1 of Twilight so much it was just simply a blast to read the beloved story from another angle!

Here are my thoughts:

Likes:
-It was so fun to read a simple read with a decently compelling storyline. I read a lot of deep, long classics and that can become very tiring sometimes. It was nice to invest myself in something less demanding.
-I like vampires. What can I say? I like spooky things.
-I really liked the pacing. Nothing was overly drawn-out or overly descriptive. It was simple and fun.

Dislikes: (Future me here: I’ve edited some of my feelings below)
-Bella is a horrible character. (Future me here: she’s not a horrible character imo. I like her. So what if she’s a lil lame here and there? Aren’t we all? She has some very good qualities that I like!) She’s everything a feminist-or just any woman-would not want to be. (Future me here: I CAN’T believe how unfeminist that statement was! C’mon sis! We love women for anything and everything they want to be. Ugh that was so 2nd wave of feminism of me to say. I’m mucho more 3rd wave now.) She’s obnoxiously clumsy, so much that I think she has Meniere’s disease. She washes dishes “by hand-not in the dishwasher” (yes, Bella made sure to point that out), she’s obsessed with Edward, she complains non-stop, she’s moody, and a little dramatic. Bella’s behavior had me laughing out loud in disbelief. I will admit by the end she bothered me a little less. (Future me here: though she does some dumb stuff here and there, I like her. I like all the characters).
-Their relationship is way too codependent. Edward and Bella can’t seem to be apart without full-on anxiety attacks. (Future me here: no one said you should seek out a relationship like this in your own life. If it works for them then whatevs! They’re fun to read. And the romance is cute & sometimes even a lil’ STEAMY)
-The writing is repetitive and down-right silly sometimes. I rolled my eyes a few times. Alright, maybe more than a few.

In the end, I think “Twilight” is a popular thing to hate. Does it deserve some of the hate? Probably. (future me: no. It really doesn’t. People love to hate on it bc they love to squash women’s imaginations. Just let people enjoy their fiction/romance/fantasy. It ain’t real! It’s fiction! #feminism I will be writing a 2,000 word essay about how twilight was popular to hate because of SEXISM. Fight me) But probably not as much as it gets.
