a story that Papa had told her, shortly after the war began, shortly after Denmark had surrendered and the soldiers had moved in overnight to take their places on the corners. One evening, Papa had told her that earlier he was on an errand ...more

What an interesting reminder of a historical closeness and concern between the leaders and the citizens of a country. Sure Denmark is smaller than some countries, but this is replicable. I loved this story of Denmark's king and the boy who would protect him because it reminds today's readers that one upon a time there were leaders with integrity who inspired their countries with their character. David Brooks is right - CHARACTER MATTERS.

“Matthew once said to me, after one of my more finely worded rants about stupid people who have the wrong opinions, “Nadia, the thing that sucks is that every time we draw a line between us and others, Jesus is always on the other side of it.” Damn.”

“Those scars you have,” Emilia says, “that you would hide behind a mask. They are the finest part of you. Now let us earn a few more.”

“awe is triggered by two simultaneous perceptions: first, that what you are looking at is vast in some way, and, second, that you can’t fit it into your existing mental structures.[30] That combination seems to trigger a feeling in people of being small in a profoundly pleasurable—although sometimes also fearful—way. Awe opens us to changing our beliefs, allegiances, and behaviors.”

“A good human being,” the fishing cat said. “Imagine what one of those could do.” “They could do anything,” the snake said quietly. “Anything at all.”

Robert D. Putnam
“Our aim in telling these stories as stories is not to excuse ourselves from the rigor of social science, but to gain the positive advantages of storytelling. We believe that stories, with their specificity and ability to express the complex realities of particular people and places and their possibly unique ability to express thought and feeling simultaneously, are the appropriate medium for capturing a sense of how social-capital creation works in real life.”
Robert D. Putnam, Better Together: Restoring the American Community
