Throughout this book there were many characters I did like, but there were also some that I didn’t enjoy all that much. I liked Maya, Chris, and of course the main character, Starr. Some that I didn’t like so much were Hailey and of course, One-Fifteen, the cop that shot Khalil. I liked Maya because she was a really good friend to Starr and always knew the best thing to do or say. She also didn’t let anyone stop her from saying the truth and what she knew was right, even if no one else agreed with her. I liked Chris because even though he wasn’t the most likable at times, he always ended up making up for it and being a great boyfriend to Starr. He wasn’t worried about what other people thought. I liked Starr for many reasons, a few being her attitude and the way she always spoke her mind and didn’t let anyone else’s opinions stop her. I didn’t like Hailey, because she was an overall horrible friend to Starr and Maya and was very mean and racist. Lastly, I didn’t like One-Fifteen, because he’s a liar. Even if he had the right to pull Khalil over for a broken tail light, he had no right to KILL him, then lie about it on the news so everyone sided with him and thought Khalil was in the wrong.

THE PLOT
I really enjoyed this story, including the plot. The story had a good beginning, middle, and end and all came together nicely. I really enjoyed how it started out with something terrible happening. Not that it was a good thing, but because it will make the story more interesting, and it sure did. I also really liked how the characters developed and changed overtime and how they mostly matured in a good way. There’s nothing I didn’t like about it, I thought it was an overall good book and was written as well as it could have been. This story seems very realistic and I definitely think that something like this could and would happen in our world today. I have seen this kind of thing happen in the world, and on the news.

THE WRITING STYLE/LANGUAGE
I really liked how Angie Thomas wrote this book. She used a lot of good writing techniques, including similes, metaphors, hyperbole, personification, and definitely imagery. One example of hyperbole from this book is “I can’t breathe, like I’m drowning in the tears I refuse to shed” (The Hate U Give. HarperCollins, 2017. Page 247). In this part is when Starr is getting interviewed about the night Khalil was shot. She was trying so hard not to cry but couldn’t help it. This is hyperbole, because Starr wasn’t actually drowning in her tears, she just felt like she was gonna cry so much it could happen. I liked how the characters talked to each other, I think this added a lot to the story and made it a lot more realistic and more fun to read. I also liked how some topics that were important kept being brought up a lot, for example, the hairbrush Khalil had was brought up many times because it was such an important part of the story and what happened and was needed to make many points.

SOCIAL INJUSTICE THEME
Throughout this book the social injustice theme was brought up a lot and was pretty easy to find out from the beginning. The main theme in this story is racism. One example of this was when One-Fifteen had pulled the two over. “‘Brian turned around and saw something in the car door. He thought it was a gun-’ It was a hairbrush” (The Hate U Give. HarperCollins, 2017.
Page 247). Everyone believed the police officer and thought he did nothing wrong without even knowing the story, possibly because he was authority but also importantly because he was white, and Khalil wasn’t. The police officer was more worried and thought he had to take extra precautions against Starr and Khalil, just because they were black. And the people around the world are definitely gonna tend to agree with a white police officer over just a young black man, which should not be the case.

COMPARISON TO TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD
The comparison to this book and TO Kill A Mockingbird is the overall theme of racism. Throughout these books, we have seen this, racism, occur many times. Both of the stories are from a young girls point of view, even if one is ten years older and black, other than white. Both of these books can show how people often take a white man's word over a black man’s. In To Kill A Mockingbird when everyone believes Bob Ewell over Tom Robinson, when Tom was definitely more believable. This is shown in The Hate U Give when One-Fifteen pulls over Khalil and Starr, then just assumes his hair brush is a gun, or a dangerous weapon, just because Khalil is black. This probably would not have happened if a white person was put into his place. The main difference in this story is just when it takes place. Same racial discrimination, almost 100 years apart.

CONNECTION TO THE REAL WORLD
This book made me realize a lot. That pretty much most cops are good people and know what’s right and do what’s right. But not all of them. I have seen countless circumstances on the news and have even learned about some in school where cops have done horrible things to young African Americans just because the color of their skin was different. I have seen stories where white cops have decided to do things differently to black people, just because they’re black, and that’s not okay. I have seen a lot of people get pulled over while watching my favorite shows Cops and Live PD, thankfully none of them have happened just because of the color of someone’s skin but if that happened, I’d hope that something would be done about it because that is not okay and stuff like that should never happen to anyone. ...more "
