The book explores complex topics surrounding the lives of adolescents, in surprising detail and depth; incorporating the Bildungsroman genre.

The structure of the book concentrates and flips between two protagonists, both through first person perspectives. It follows them as they navigate their formative years, crashing through challenges of pain, love and self discovery. First introduced is Ava, a bisexual, troubled teenage girl, drowning in a pool of relentless and overwhelming grief, after the suicide of her best friend Kelly. She is consumed by hopelessness and rebelliously acts out, resulting in her expulsion from school. At her questionable job, the Magick Kebab, she meets instrospective Gideon suffering from his own issues. Later on, it is revealed that Gideon self harms and struggles with anxiety and depression. Together they form a relationship, breaking down the invisible walls of distrust, and overcoming internal hurdles. Their bond quickly becomes more meaningful both romantically and sexually. It is quite heartwarming to read as they both become increasingly protective of one another especially when an ex lover becomes involved.

This novel covers a wide range of themes, some of which include the topics of mental health and adolescence. What does it truly mean to be normal?
This coverage and these questions, allows the reader to relate these beautifully flawed characters, to feel validated and recognised. For these issues and angst to be expressed without shame or sugarcoating, is incredibly refreshing for countless. It allows for awareness and a better understanding of mental illnesses, while demonstrating how this toil can affect one’s life and their ability to function, work and cooperate in daily circumstances.

I have most thoroughly enjoyed this brilliant piece of writing because of its many characteristics, and quirks. Including its narrative style, perspective and wonderful portrayal of reality. The very structure of the writing depicts the opinions and personal thoughts of each character, which results in a very contemplative and enthralling piece to read. It demonstrates a tender attitude towards young adults and the honesty behind each struggle is what really captivated me when reading this work of art.
Although, I must say, I was disappointed with the slightly unsatisfying ending. It was abrupt and unexpected. Uncertainties still surrounded the protagonists and goals seemed to be left unfinished.

Nonetheless, I would still most definitely recommend this novel to young adults, (13+ years) as the book utilises language that will expand the vocabulary and minds of adolescents, as well as including, at times, quite confronting content. It walks such a fine line between humour and an intense, emotional depth, a combination that so many readers will enjoy.
