Book cover for A Cup of Comfort for Teachers
Where are all the substitute teachers? The subbing shortage is so severe in some cities that off-duty police and firefighters are sometimes hired to do the job. Now, this makes sense to me. When I get the call at 6:00 A.M., I bolt out of ...more

Sadly, the pay is even worse for Subs than regular teachers, and yet you are to jump in and instantly take over in any class at any time without any notice. You are treated terribly by both staff and students, and they wonder why they can't get substitute teachers. Sometimes there's the draw of the opportunity to get a position so you put up with it over and over, smile and take the beating while you do your best to follow the lesson plans or when there are none, find a way to teach the children so they don't fall be hind while their classroom teacher is out, yet still you are unacknowledged. You can work for years for one school district, and even on specific school and yet, you are nothing to them. They don't include you in activities, they are friends with each other, but not you. You are an outsider. Even when they start requesting you and tell you that they only trust you in their class while they are out, they still put you at a distance. And yet, they wonder why no one wants to sub. They advertise no experience necessary, but don't give the ones with actual experience more money for a job well done. You come back year after year, and you get the same pay as someone who was just hired this week. 10 years of teaching as a Substitute for the same school gets the same pay as someone teaching for 5 minutes and without a teaching background. And they wonder why they can't get subs.
