As Max Hastings' book makes abundantly clear, revenge and racism, were even more significant factors.
Unfortunately Hastings tries to justify the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as a way to shorten the war. He leaves out the fact that keeping the Russians from becoming involved was probably the motivating factor--not "saving American lives" as has been often cited.
Still, Retribution is rich with details and amazing anecdotal stories. I found his mostly negative take on General Douglas MacArthur to be brilliantly argued. Indeed, MacArthur's arrogance, his disdain for any opinions other than his own, and his failure to pay attention to detail--this actually did cost many American lives....more
