Akwaeke Emezi
“I'm trying to protect myself now”
Akwaeke Emezi, Freshwater

Akwaeke Emezi
“We have told you about some of them [gods] -- Yshwa, for example. Ala, the controller of minor gods, our mother. BUt there are others, and anyone who knows anything knows this, knows about the godly stowaways that came along with the corrupters stole our people, what the swollen hulls carried over the bellied seas, the masks, the skin on the inside of the drum, the words under the words, the water in the water. the stories that survived, the new names they took the temper of old gods sweeping through new land, the music taken that is the same as the music left behind. And, of course, the humans who survived, those selected among them, the ones in white, the ones shaking shells and mineral deposits, the ones ridden, the ones chosen, the ones who follow, work, and serve because calls pass through blood no matter how many oceans you drop death into.”
Akwaeke Emezi, Freshwater

Caleb Azumah Nelson
“You prod the pain in your left side and want to be made light. You pray with every action this will not be the day. Every day is the day, but you pray this day is not the day. Your mother prays every day that this will not be the day. You hear her through the bathroom door, praying for her sons, even as you play rapper while you swim in shallow water. N one has bars harder than your mum as she prays for you every day that this will not be the day. You know that this day could be the day but still you laugh it off when your partner says she's concerned for you to travel at night. You flash the smile of a king but you both know regicide is rife. You wash off dark soapsuds in the shower and pray that today is not the day. If you give a name to this day does that mean this life is yours? To name: basic, audacious. Lay claim, take power, take aim, this is yours. This act is like bringing a butter knife to a gunfight. You want to play rapper so you can say, I know that line went over your heads. You want to lie in darkness beside your partner and talk death like you have nothing to fear. You do not want to die before you can live. This is basic and audacious, but you want to lay claim to it while you still can.”
Caleb Azumah Nelson, Open Water

Akwaeke Emezi
“When you have been living in a great shadow, it hurts to look at the light, to be awake, to feel.”
Akwaeke Emezi, Freshwater

“There comes a time when you have to stop being who you were, when you have to let it go if you're going to keep moving, if you're going to survive, because the past doesn't need a future. It has no use for what comes next. The past is greedy, always swallowing you up, always taking. If you don't hold it back, if you don't dam it up, it will spread and take and drown.

The past is not a receding horizon. Rather, it advances one moment at a time, marching steadily forward until it has claimed everything and we become again who we were; we become ghosts when the past cates us. You can't live as long as your past does. It's one or the other.”
