Marion said: " a friend of mine got me this book, telling me how much she loved it. i don’t think i like it as much as she does but i do have a special kind of love for agnes. since the very beginning, when we’re presented to her mother, i knew i was going to cheri a friend of mine got me this book, telling me how much she loved it. i don’t think i like it as much as she does but i do have a special kind of love for agnes. since the very beginning, when we’re presented to her mother, i knew i was going to cherish her wisdom and connect with her feelings. unconventional, wild, confident, free. a tenacious spirit who walks and runs and experiences life at the beat of her own drum. a sweet child of the farm turned empath, listener, doctor. her brave life told to us in simple words, capturing her essence. she represents the kind of women who goes against the grain without necessarily wanting to, but who forges a path for the kind souls i want to be part of.

sadly, i found beauty in agnes’s grief. it was raw and pure, and her devotion to her boy transcended everything. there was a cry for help in her remorse, the feeling of failure haunting her when her intuition had always been there to guide her route. more than failing as a mom, she had failed as a witch, something she had been since her first breath. the anger that came with it was blazing and consuming, and i don’t think she knew what to do with it beside letting it burn until the fire died. she also seemed very alone in her suffering, even when people were around. i fear not a lot of people understood her and therefore struggled to identify with her grief. but it’s in the little things that she found a way to let the light enter.

i liked that this whole story is based on shakepears but he never becomes the main character, even though he was clearly the famous one in the family. the place is given to agnes and her relationships to her relatives, which is in a way very feminine since women have been socialized to build connections. nonetheless, he remains present but in the background, as if he was always meant to be a supporting character in her life and only sometimes an equal.

also random thought: agnes made me think of agatha harkness (agatha all along), especially her grief. how she would see her son in every little boy she would cross path with; how she would recognize his features in her partner; how she would blame herself for not being able to save him despite her intuition and knowledge of the craft. so much pain and anger intertwined in their witchy hearts. ...more "
