the story is insanely creative, right down to the similes / metaphors used. the writing style is so fun and the character voices are HILARIOUS.

the worldbuilding! it's so metal. this is the kind of in-depth worldbuilding i salivate over. this book ticked all my boxes:

• interesting, fleshed-out setting (space!)
• unique magic system (necromancy, and not JUST necromancy, but necromancy with many different disciplines)
• sick lore (the ninth house is a small cult that's literally underground)
• worldbuilding so ridiculously in-depth that you can tell the author deeply cares about it (the pages upon pages of name etymology and deep dive on each house in the back?? are you kidding? i love you for that tamsyn muir)
• foreshadowing that all ties together in the end (no comment on the ending, it hurt me)

the lore of the ninth house and the characters within it are just so *chef's kiss*. they're a necromancy cult guarding a mysterious locked tomb. i love that all the other houses are just normal people while the ninth house rolls in looking like the addams family with skulls painted on their faces, spooky drapey dark clothing, and an unmatched cryptic flair. the ninth house commits to the bit HARD. this story can be boiled down to a bunch of normies with a couple of goth lesbian cultists at the forefront. incredible. and harrow weekend at bernie-ing her parents' corpses around so nobody outside her house knows they're dead is both hilarious and tracks with the Lore™

gideon and harrow ❤️ this is how you write an enemies to lovers story! these two were truly at each other's throats constantly. they hated each other's guts. their dynamic was perfect. it's angsty black cat and overzealous golden retriever. it's rosalie and emmett from twilight. it's spooky goth girl and frat boy jock. it's 2 raccoons wrestling in a garbage can. this is the lesbian representation we need.

also i need to mention this line: "you are my only friend. i am undone without you." dare i say mr. darcy if he was an emotionally repressed gay woman?

this would be a 5 star read for me if the plot was like 25% easier to follow. that being said i am definitely interested in checking out the next book! ...more "
