I don't think I've ever heard of a horror series before, and I certainly haven't read one before, and I honestly think this was done so well. I was unsure how it would go, since I think horror/thrillers generally are better as standalones, 4.5 stars.

I was unsure how it would go, since I think horror/thrillers generally are better as standalones, and I guess they ultimately tell one story, but overall I think this was super well done. It answered enough questions while still leaving so many open, it just feels like a part of an overall story but wound up finding a good place to pause.

I was genuinely spooked at points, it just got under my skin as I was reading it in the dark at night, and even when it was full daylight out and I was surrounded by people while on a film set, I was getting goosebumps, so I think that signifies enough.

[MILD SPOILERS]

I also really liked how mental health treatment was never scoffed at or put in a negative light, nor was needing medication or being mentally ill ever deemed as bad; if it was, it was a mindset that was not at all agreed upon by the narrative and was a point against the person who thought so. There was a moment, though, when Cam tells Siena that she's not schizophrenic, and while ultimately that's the truth and I can't remember if it was before or after she discovers evidence that she really isn't hallucinating, it did almost feel like she was saying "no way, you may need help, but you're not crazy or anything like that" but it was only one line and I could've just been reading into it, and with all the positivity towards getting help, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if I was just very much reading into something that wasn't intended that way. Even when Siena would deny her diagnosis, it was always clarified through the narrative that her feelings are valid and there's a difference between a person's own feelings and the truth, and that just because she feels like there's something wrong with her doesn't mean there actually is (in the sense of having a diagnosis) and it all felt very respectful.

Ultimately, I had a great time and I can't wait until the next book because I have so many questions and no real answers and I need to learn more. ...more "
