This book falls under the genre of science fiction. The story introduces some characters, Paul, the Prince of house Atreides, Jessica, his mother, and Leto, Duke of Atreides and Paul’s father. Paul’s mother is trying to teach Paul how to use the power of the Voice, which is a power that basically commands people to do things when they hear this Voice. The listeners have no control over their actions. Jessica believes that Paul is some chosen one of this group of witches that she was once a part of. These witches are led by the Reverend Mother who comes to Paul’s home planet to test him. There is a box that once he places his hand in it, the box messes with his nerves making him feel pain. If he withdraws his hand early, the Reverend Mother has a poison needle that would kill him almost instantaneously. Paul passes the test. Paul goes to talk with his father about their House moving to a new planet called Arrakis. This new planet is a desert planet with winds that would shred metal and daylight that would kill. Water is a very valuable resource on Arrakis. Arrakis also is a source of spice that is highly sought after and also very valuable. Duke Leto senses a trap placed by the Baron of the Harkonnens, who had lived on the planet before leading the spice excavation. So he sends his best soldier, Duncan, to try to meet with the natives of the planet, the Fremen, to see if they could ally with him. The Atreides are great on water and the air but they are not great at fighting on the ground or the desert. When the Atreides land on Arrakis they find that the spice mining equipment is in poor shape because the Harkonnens sabotaged them before they left. As the Atreides get settled in an ambush occurs. A trusted royal doctor, Yueh, betrayed House Atreides by dropping the shields which allowed the Harkonnens to land ships and open fire on the castle. The Atreides were overwhelmed easily and Duke Leto was captured and taken to the Baron of the Harkonnens. Yueh had replaced one of Leto’s teeth with a poison gas filled one so he could assassinate the Baron. Ultimately the Baron survived. Paul and his mother were taken to the desert to be left to die. They managed to overpower the guards and took the ship which ultimately crashed. So they took some suits to help them survive and a tent and left to survive. This is the end of part one.

I enjoyed this book. It was a jam packed story. The story included so much detail and events in 197 pages. I was entertained 100% of the time. There was consistent action and the way the story leads into the next part makes me want to keep reading. Paul is a character I admire because even though basically all of his people are dead, including his dad. He is still powering forward trying to make sure he can ally himself with the Fremen and take back the throne. I would suggest this book to someone who wants a constantly moving story with an in depth description of a whole new galaxy should read this. I can’t begin to imagine what will happen in the next few books. ...more "
