I love this quote from Lydia’s father. I feel like the best of parents want to raise their children for the world as it should be, and there lies a fine line between living in fantasy and preparing our children to be suited for the better world we hope to build. I also feel like most parents go through this moment when realizing they their child is no long a child to protect, but an adult with a future ahead of them. Edward W. Said
“All knowledge that is about human society, and not about the natural world, is historical knowledge, and therefore rests upon judgment and interpretation. This is not to say that facts or data are nonexistent, but that facts get their importance from what is made of them in interpretation… for interpretations depend very much on who the interpreter is, who he or she is addressing, what his or her purpose is, at what historical moment the interpretation takes place.”
Edward Said

David McCullough
“To me, history ought to be a source of pleasure. It isn't just part of our civic responsibility. To me, it's an enlargement of the experience of being alive, just the way literature or art or music is."

[The Title Always Comes Last; NEH 2003 Jefferson Lecturer interview profile]”
David McCullough

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
“By seeking and blundering we learn.”
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Bertolt Brecht
“The human race tends to remember the abuses to which it has been subjected rather than the endearments. What's left of kisses? Wounds, however, leave scars.”
Bertolt Brecht

H.G. Wells
“Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe.”
H.G. Wells
