This book exceeded all my expectations of a 2nd book in a trilogy, middle book syndrome doesn't exist in this universe. And the ending, I can't stop thinking about it. It is so rare a cliffhanger hits me that hard, the stress, the heartbreak, the NEED to keep reading!!! I really enjoyed reading Red Rising, and surprisingly, enjoyed Golden Son even more!

A few years have passed between the first and second book and Darrow is now in his twenties. The legendary Reaper, remains a compelling and flawed protagonist, grappling with the burdens of leadership, the consequences of his actions, and the weight of his past. The majority of this novel focuses on Darrow and co outside the academy after their training is complete and Darrow is now a Peerless Scarred. Darrow is still on his mission to bring down the society from within and get his revenge, but things are not going to plan, he has to make deals and agreements with unexpected characters, while there is War brewing between golds and the stakes are higher than ever. Darrow has to act instinctively to each situation he is presented with, sometimes doubting his choices and actions, but he has no one he can trust fully to help him, you can see his internal struggles being behind enemy lines and vulnerabilities a lot more in this book. The lines between friends and enemies is blurred and it is hard to know even for the reader who to trust! There is so much deceit and betrayal in this book it is hard to keep up

We also find out a lot more about the Sons of Ares and who some of the members are, as well as the inner workings of the politics of the Gold, which normally I would be less interested in but I felt Brown did a good job of immersing you into the world and caring about what is happening, even the politics and the high stakes feeling everyone is going through.

The plot is very action-driven and just kept changing direction, I could not predict what would happen next at any moment, and the number of surprises, twists and turns made it a very engaging and exciting read. The stakes constantly escalate, with new threats emerging when you least expect it. No one feels safe in this world, not even Darrow, characters are injured and even killed when you least expect it which contributes to the tension building gradually throughout the book. I found the book to be very fast-paced right until jaw-dropping twist that keeps you guessing until the very end.

I adored the characters in this book, Sevro especially. As a character he is brilliant and his friendship with Darrow is so heartwarming, and I can not fault him, I love their bromance. And of course Darrow, he will forever be my favourite in this series, being simultaneously the hero and anti-hero throughout. And Ragnar!! The Stained Obsidian, his character was so different to the others we have already met, he was such a badass too and I liked how he formed his friendship with Darrow and the others, and Darrows trust in him.

This series is fast becoming one of my favourites, it is very well written and thought out, a brutal, dark and heartbreaking read. I definitely recommend to anyone, so long as you don't mind having your heart broken! ...more "
