And DAMN - everyone is right. This book is spectacular! Its so well written and developed. It's high fantasy based in a completely different world. There is a lot to learn and so much information will be thrown at you. I stressed myself out at first trying to take notes, but eventually, I just let myself enjoy it without worrying about the details.

So essentially the blurb already lays the necessary ground work for the book. Young adults who are going to college to essentially choose what they want their job to be (quadrant): dragon rider quadrant, scribe quadrant, healer quadrant, or infantry quadrant..... Our FMC, Violet (who also happens to be the daughter of the general) has been raised thinking she would choose the scribe quadrant like her dad, but ends up being voluntold that she needs to become a Dragon Rider. The world is divided into 2 kingdoms that have been at war with each other for over 400 years. The purpose of the Dragon Quadrant is to be the military and defend their kingdom. Oh! Violet also has a condition with her bones and joints being weak so she is already starting at a disadvantage.

Violet runs into her old best friend, Dain and becomes part of his section/squad. This squad is led by Xaden Riorson (who has a personal vendetta AGAINST Violet). We get some mild love triangle action in this book but its pretty glaringly obvious the direction she wants for her romantic interest.

A fun thing the author did in this book to help the world building is having our FMC recite her knowledge about the kingdoms/world during high stress situations as a coping mechanism. We learn a lot as a reader during her moments of coping.

Speaking of high stress situations, this book is about 90% high stress. Its fast paced and action packed. This book will have you on the edge of your seat with high adrenaline. You will laugh out loud, cheer, cry, smile, and have to lift your jaw up off of the floor so many times.

So, this is an unfinished series. I went completely against my policy to read this any way. The ending is a bit of a cliffy but not really. Maybe some of my other reads have conditioned me to feel like this isn't much of a cliffhanger. The book ends at a natural stopping point and you aren't really left hanging on anything immediate. There is still war and A LOT to figure out, but people are mostly ok and things are stable. There is a crazzzy ending though in terms of shock factor.

I am so excited for the rest of this series to be released. I love this world and the characters! I will probably reread this book countless times until the next release. I cannot recommend it enough.

Nov 2023: finished my first reread to prepare for book 2 that comes out TOMORROW!!!! OMG, I loved this book even more than the first time. The emotions were so high this time! The foreshadowing I missed during my first reread is embarrassing. Just pathetic (am I even a reader?!?!). Rebecca weaves in so many little details that are so important but are easily tossed aside by the casual first reader. The second read though is NECESSARY and PIVOTAL. I feel ready (maybe) for book 2 now. I am so nervous that this is a 5 book series and so many things have already happened in book 1 that typically takes multiple books. That makes me think death and destruction is waiting for us in the sequels. I am S T R E S S E D but so excited for this journey. The dragons have my whole heart and they truly make this book. Perfection. No critiques or complaints. My favorite book of the year HANDS DOWN. I am predicting that I am not gonna like book 2 as much. We'll see in less than 24 hours!!! ...more "
