" I was really excited for this book. I’m a sucker for all things faerie but this book was a huge let down. It was just generally blah. The entire book was a filler and not the fun, entertaining kind. More along the lines of ‘...are we going to get to I was really excited for this book. More along the lines of ‘...are we going to get to the plot...?’ I found myself constantly checking how many pages I had left just to confirm that this is actually the entire plot.

*spoiler alert* (although that’s a generous statement since there is nothing worth spoiling)

I enjoyed the internal conflict of Jude, being raised by your parents killer but still loving him for what he’s done for you is definitely a head scratching situation. I also enjoyed the struggle that she goes through to gain respect and power in a world that treats her like dirt, very admirable. But the delivery of these conflicts fell short. I feel like there were so many ways to express this idea in a much more creative form than her just becoming a spy (didn’t even go on interesting missions. Potential. Wasted).

Besides these conflicts, Jude was not very interesting, she was a pretty cookie-cutter strong female protagonist. I don’t have any idea of what her hobbies are, what she’s good at, what her weaknesses or strengths are. Even with the book being in her perspective she somehow managed to reveal nearly nothing about herself. The relationship with her sister was just downright strange, not implausible but still weird. Traun (I don’t even remember her name, that how blah the book is) has such a bland personality that I feel like the only thing I know about her is that she’s not willing to stand up for her siblings and she has a horrible taste in men. Same with Viv and Oak, I know next to nothing about either besides that the former is rebellious and the later is a mischievous child . I don’t understand how such a long book can lack so much plot and yet still not focus enough time on the characters.

Speaking of botched characters that should NOT be revered nearly as much as they are on Instagram, we come to Cardan. Let me start off by saying there is a difference between enemies to lovers and bullies who have a crush on a girl. I don’t understand how he can try and drown her, humiliate her all the time and constantly be rude and yet still be loved my readers. Did we read the same book? I don’t care that he was abused and felt jealous of her, that doesn’t excuse the horrible things he did, his behaviour just romanticizes the notion that abuse equals love in a relationship and that’s not a lesson I want to be teaching anyone.

And even if I accepted his juvenile attempts at romance, why did Jude suddenly find herself attracted to him??? There was no indication of attraction through out the entire book and suddenly they’re making out. Again I don’t understand how a book can be so long and yet not spend time on anything. There was no build up of tension or moments where they connected or even had things in common so why the desire??? Just a huge no on the romance side.

All the side characters In general were not developed properly. They all fell short and felt very 2 dimensional.

Characters aside the world building was just confusing. Most books with magic set boundaries. rules even simple ones that are easy to follow. This sets limitations and add interesting obstacles to the story. This book just tossed a bunch of mythical items in the story and called it a day. How much power does each person have? Does it vary? what can you do with it? What kind of creatures live there, what is the seelie and unseelie court?? There were just so much of the world that should’ve been explored it was ridiculous. Again, how do you say so much and mean so much.

The plot was unoriginal, not interesting and pretty much non-existing till the very end.
