So when I found out that Mary E. Pearson was writing a new series and that it was going to be an adult fantasy this time, I immediately had to preorder it. I wanted to love this book so much, and I think I may have set my expectations a bit high because I just didn't quite love this book. I had a bit of a hard time getting into it at first, and I don't know if maybe it was the writing style, but I had trouble staying focused on the book. I do think the more I read of the book, the more I got into it, and I did really like it towards the end. I think there's a lot of great ideas in the book, but there's almost too many ideas, and the book feels a bit crowded if that makes sense. I think the author was setting up all these plot points for future books to come, but it felt a bit much at times. I also admit that I'm a really impatient reader, and I think this book requires a lot more patience than maybe I gave it. I do think this is one that I want to reread at a better time when I can focus on it better because there are elements that I really like and I did enjoy the two main characters (Bristol and Tyghan) but I feel like because I struggled a bit in the beginning, it kind of soured my reading experience of the rest of the book. I really enjoyed the last hundred pages of this book, and one thing I really liked throughout the book was that there was sort of a mystery aspect of it in a way. There is quite a bit that is revealed to the reader as the story goes on and there are different characters that have different view points of events that have occurred in the past or ideas for how things should be handled, so as the reader, you kind of get to piece the story together as you read which is appreciated. I liked how you have both the modern world and Elphame (the fae world) existing together in the same universe. Again, there are a lot of ideas in the book that I really liked, but it definitely took me to get into it. There is still a lot left unresolved by the end of the book so I'm definitely going to stick with this series but I think next time I need to reread this book and give it my undivided attention and then maybe I'll enjoy it as much as I had hoped. ...more "
