with that being said, i really enjoyed this book. the world building is a lot to learn right off the bat, but i thought that it wasn’t too terrible to follow especially since i was taking the time to annotate. the society portrayed within the book is very interesting; i thought the whole color classification idea to be ingenious, simple, and effective. the whole concept definitely pulls elements from real life into the sci-fi fictional universe, which i think helps elevate its tangibility.

in general, i enjoyed the overall atmosphere that was created within this book and how otherworldly it feels because it takes place in space. i also thought it was interesting how earth was a social construct within the characters of the story. it was cool to see their perspectives on certain historical events as a thing from the far past due to the book taking place at a futuristic point in time—humans living on mars being one example of this.

one thing that i love most about the book is definitely the main character’s purpose and storyline. darrow turning into a gold while undercover as a true red is very interesting. i can’t wait to see how his journey will evolve as he slowly works his way up the hierarchy in order to destroy the corrupt society from the inside out.

i do think the action was great and the politics surprisingly complex (in a good way), but one thing that i didn’t completely love was the whole initiation sequence. i was invested in the beginning and genuinely enjoyed the hardships darrow and the other golds went through when it came to balance, heartache, and power within the association of war. i just didnt think that the first trial would take up the majority of this book’s story, so to me, it felt as though it did drag on a little bit. i remember wanting to reach a point where i no longer had to read about the ongoings of the false war that darrow and the other golds were playing in, but that’s just me and my opinion. i do plan to re-read in the near future when i decide to continue on with the rest of the series, so ill make an edit to this review with my additional thoughts to see if my opinion has changed or not lol.

i have heard that each book gets better as you go along, so i can’t wait to continue the rest of the series! ...more "
