This book was nothing like what I expected but exactly what it needed to be. The plot was not great, and overall, it was spectacularly stupid, but in the end it just kinda worked.

“In order to break the curse, your child must fall in love with a person who has spent their whole life at sea, whose parents were once part of a traveling theater troupe, who can play banjo and accordion and harpsichord, and who is allergic to asparagus.”

Princess Juliana is cursed to never be able to touch the sunlight unless she falls in love with a very specific person. She does not let her curse stop her from breaking free from the castle to explore the kingdom and wreak some havoc in the meantime. Along the way, she makes friends, enemies, falls in love, and foils plots-good and bad.

“Their asparagus crops were known far and wide as being the most crisp, and the most pure. Even if you boiled them too long, they didn’t go all mushy, which, if you’ve ever over-boiled asparagus, you’ll have to agree is pretty neat.”

This is the kind of book that you just have to read for the dialogue and individual scenes, not the overall plot because at the end of the book the bad guys are not defeated (just inconvenienced), the doctor doesn’t fall in love with the pirate, the sister doesn’t fall in love with the thug, the traitor doesn’t fall in love with the wizard, and the counter-curse doesn’t fall in love with the princess, the revolution doesn’t start, and the King’s secret child doesn’t get revealed. When you actually get down to it, literally nothing meaningful actually happens. Even with all that, I still enjoyed the random assortment of characters (a magical pool of raven blood?) and the bluntly funny dialogue.

I recommend this book to anyone who has free time and wants a nonsensical book that will make them laugh. ...more "
